Does anyone else in the West Rand have a major red ant infestation? My place, my neighbours my parents, my sister-in-law have red ants in the garden and house. It started a few months ago and now it's getting worse, the nests are spreading.

Are these people illegally occupying their houses? Have they not paid rent?

Haha. You guys are a riot.

Seriously the insects. Anyone have a problem? Looks like a major invasion in our area.

Maxforce Ant Bait Granules

We have the same problem in Midvaal. (Where Red Ant Security is based btw)
The stuff works like a charm, is not toxic to pets, not water sensitive and works for 6 weeks, after which you just do a preventative spread.

I only stopped using it when I bought two cute bantam chickens for my garden. No termites, no red ants, or snails survive longer than a day in that garden.

Got me some red ants and some serious molecricket infestation. BTW how does one rid your garden from Molecrickets? I found that the red ant population can be effectively controlled with Kombat poison for ants. Apply once or twice a week for three weeks and voila, no more ants. The Mole crickets are a bugger though...my lawn looks like a green swiss cheese.

See my post about bantam chickens. :)

Bucket of soap water, pour over area, wait for molecricket to surface completely, apply doom spray generously. Repeat for each molecricket. Works, the stupid range of insecticides intended for Molecrickets was just a waste of time and money.

ant trap. They these little green discs you buy in the gardening section or in the pesticide sections.

works well

I can confirm these work well. They carry whatever poison is inside back into their nest...

We just used the OMO on the grass trick two years ago. Last year, and this year, maybe 5 of them came by, and they didn't survive long enough to tell the world about it.

just a quick note if you plan on using the ant trap. Ants are extremely sensitive to poisons so the poison in the ant trap is well disguised (its arsenic based i think). So keep the disc away from any pets like dogs they might eat it

The ants are responding to "rainy season" most likely - they are always around but are most active, and thus most visible, just before rains. We know when it is going to rain because our local ants start dashing all over the place.

Poisons can be problematic, because most of them continue along the food chain, thus killing the ants' natural predators too. The predators (birds, lizards, frogs, assassin bugs, spiders, wasps, etc.) take a little while to start increasing in numbers (either by migrating towards the food source - or by increased reproduction) to control the ant numbers. But they do, and they will - if you let them.

Which kind of red ants are they? are they the biting and rather aggressive red (red-orangeyish) ants (these don't usually come into the house so much) or the paler orange sugar ant types? Remove any possible sources of food - place in tupperwares, etc. and if you need to use some things like talcum powder to reduce their coming into your house.

By all means ignore my request not to use poisons - but I stopped using poisons (other than a directly applied - not sprayed - herbicide to control kikuyu or other alien invasive plants and trees) many, many years ago and the change has been incredible. Within a week or so of any pest insect starting to become noticeable - the predators start pulling in and within a short while the balance is restored...
