I hope someone can help me in solving a recent problem I now have with my internet connection.
For 2 years now, we have had a Win XP Desktop PC, plus my Win 8.1 Laptop connected to the internet via a Billion 400G ADSL WiFi router. Our main use is in our study, where the wi-fi router is situated
We have a Telkom 4 Mbps ADSL line.
The desktop PC was connected to the router via Ethernet cable, and I accessed the same router via my laptop's WiFi connection
With the above set-up we were both able to access the internet simultaneously.
I was achieving download speeds (Speedtest.net) of around ~ 3.3 Mbps on my wifi-connected laptop. My vrou always accessed the internet via her PC, connected via Ethernet cable to the same router, but never performed speed tests (she is not a heavy internet user), but she was able to access her mail, and social media sites, and occasional web browsing with reasonable speeds (or at least she never complained about slow connections)
We replaced her XP desktop a couple of days ago with a new, much higher spec, Win8.1 desktop system.
This has caused my laptop internet speeds to drop from around the previous 3+ Mbps on wi-fi, to an unusable ~ 0.25 Mbps via my wi-fi connection, while her ethernet-connected PC still enjoys a much faster internet connection.
I also find that I keep needing to reset the “network adaptor” as my laptop regularly loses wi-fi connection. But this only happens when she is also connected to internet via Ethernet.
Would it help if I started using an Ethernet cable instead of a wi-fi connection? Although this kind of defeats the object of wi-fi, as I also want to use my laptop in our lounge via wi-fi
