I have a garmin forerunner 220. Had it for about 5 months. The heart rate either completely drops out or reports a very low value which makes the average heart rate well below what Discovery vitality demands as acceptable. Battery on the transmitter was changed but did not help. Anyway, more interested in what other south african users might have experienced with regard to any garmin hrm soft straps and how the local agent is handling it. There seems to be quite a lot discussion around this issue on foreign forums and often garmin simply replaces the soft strap, within warranty of course. Something about deterioration of the electrodes within the strap due to salt from perspiration. Well thats my conclusion after all the reading. And i did follow all the cleaning instructions as per manual. Just returned mine today to Cape Union. Will await feedback from the supplier.

It is a know issue with some versions of the Garmin Soft Strap, mine does it as well. One of the hacked solutions can be find here.

Thanks guys. Both the links were very helpful. Both point to using a specific Polar strap with Garmin transmitter. Going to try this should i not get an amicable response from Garmin South Africa.
