Problems connecting Nokia 6310i to Internet via Bluetooth

Hi

A friend of mine came by for help - he was having difficulty connecting to the internet via bluetooth with his Nokia 6310i. In all of my trying, I managed easily to connect to the MTN network (*99#), so that eliminated problems with the PC, dial up networking , internet explorer and bluetooth.

But I cannot make a connection to Vodacom via bluetooth. The dialog says "connecting to remote computer" and then it just hangs up. An error message pops up on the phone but its too quick to see what it says. BTW I used *99#, *99***1#, and *99***3#, and they all didn't work. I tried with the SIM card from my 3G datacard, and that also didn't work. Then I tried the same thing using my Samsung D600E, and again the DUN got to the same point before hanging up.

Am at a loss now. Would appreciate some help. I'd hate to tell they guy to go to MTN, cos it works effortlessly.

can you initiate a gprs connection from the phone itself, using the vodacom sim?
(ie, connecting to a wap page)

Has the Service Provider activated Data on the SIM card?
It is free but not active unless requested.

On a seperate point, I had a problem maintaining the Bluetooth conection from a 6310 so now I just use IR, saves the batery life too. :)
 
also maybe check which apn is being used (under "gprs modem settings")
mtn's apn is "mymtn", i think, and vodacom's is "internet"

Umm, I'm afraid I didn't think of that so didn't try it. Good point though, I'll ask my friend to try it. I have a feeling that that will also be unsuccessful...

SIM is activated, because it worked fine with my 3G datacard.

IR is not an option cos his laptop doesn't have it (and USB IR is a cable nightmare.....)

I must say that resources on the 'how to' are very scarce on the VC website

It would be nice to find a page called: "How to connect your computer to the internet using your cellphone as a GPRS modem". What the DUN settings are, what the phone number is etc.....Unless I'm very stupid, I can't find this basic info anywhere. V3G, it would be nice to have this as a resource in your FAQ...

there are instructions for that on the vodacom4me site, it's just hidden away a little - under "pda setup" in the "my devices" menu. ;)

select the phone make and model as the nokia 6310i, and then under "pda manufacturer", select "laptop". you can then choose the os version (windows only, i think), and the connectivity method you want instructions for...

What a clever place to hide it.....somewhere where nobody will look..........

Thanks for all the help - problem is sorted. For some reason the settings sent by vodacom did not put "Internet" as the APN. V3G, I'll check the firmware, but remember in my original post that the phone worked fine with MTN....

The Vodacom and MTN networks use kit from different manufacturers, so you might pick up compatibility problems on one network but not the other.

Quite an anticlimax, really. Try this ....is it working?.....yes.

But seriously, thanks for all the help, couldn't have done it withoucha....;)
