Helsinki - Nokia Corp says its top N8 model, aimed at making up lost ground in the smartphone market, has had power problems with some handsets not turning on after recharging.

Nokia spokesperson Eija-Riitta Huovinen said the problem is limited to "a small number of handsets" and will be fixed in line with Nokia warranty rules.

Huovinen said Nokia has identified the problem and "has taken immediate precautionary measures".

Nokia said on Friday that it has not had any other complaints about the N8 touch screen phone, which features a 12-megapixel digital camera and 9cm display, since the company started shipping the handsets in September.

Oops!

Weird that Nokia could not immediately give out the batch numbers of the phones affected.

Hi, i went to my local mall to-day wanting to get myself a Nokia N8 on contract and was advised by both Cell C and MTN against getting the phone and was told that there are software problems with the phone and as the guy from Cell C said the phone "crashes" whatever that means and that there will only be software updates for this phone in April 2011.
I would like to find out from existing N8 owners if this is true and if they are experiencing major problems with their phones.

haven't had any issues. i'd be wary of "advice" coming from salesmen in retail outlet tbh - they often have incentives to sell particular models. i should imagine that if you have a dud battery they will replace it as most mobile phones have a 24 month warranty.

Yeah,i had quite a number of reboots with my review unit, but other than that it was quite stable, less reboots than my N81 used to have.

Could you get me the name and number of the Cell-C and MTN stores who gave you these information? I'm sure that Nokia will not be very happy if they find out that these guys working at the Cell Shops who doesn't know what they are talking about are talking nonsens about their phones.

Both the Cell c store and the Mtn stores are situated in the Centurion mall i do not have names of the persons but the guy at Cell C was a white guy whome i presumed was the manager.
So what you are telling me then is that i can feel safe taking out a contract on a Nokia N8 and feel at ease?

I've been using my N8 non-stop since the 6th of December and it's flawless. I even sold my iPhone3GS after a while.

I have received the exact same feedback from the Vodashop in Clearwater Mall as well as the MTN - I have been waiting for my N8 since November 20th 2010 but each time I go back they state that they do not have any phones available as they have sent them all back to Nokia due to the huge amount of "Comebacks" with this phone - I was also told about the "software issues" - it has not changed my mind about the phone though as I have watched and read every review under the sun for the N8, iPhone4, Galaxy S, HTC Desire HD, BB Torch & Droid X phones and imo the N8 is the best by a country mile - I am just unable to get one asthey wont give me one :(

Another Nokio SA employee opening a My BB account, trying to get the poor public to buy a crappy midrange phone. *sigh*

You DON'T mention a Nokio N8 with an iPhone 4, Galaxy S or HTC Desire HD, cos the N8 has a 600 Mhz CPU & 256MB RAM, wihich places it in the midrange category.

I'll compare my N8 with any other phone on the market. I don't say it's the best, but it will definately win a lot of tests. To mention a few out of my head in no specific order:

1. Battery Life
2. Build Quality
3. Screen Quality
4. Photos Quality
5. Video Quality

It's what inside the phone that's most important, something Nokia still fail to understand.

Please don't insult any member of this forum by suggesting that Symbian can be compared to iOS or Android.

Uhmm... I had a iPhone. I sold it because I prefer the N8.
I also have a Android phone. It is in the box in my cupboard. I still prefer the N8.

I think someone like me who had all 3 phones at the same time would have a idea of which one most people will prefer.

If you prefer the iPhone or Android, well, good for you. I prefer the N8. (Personal experience)

PS. If you haven't used Symbian^3 OS then you can't judge it.
