I'm having problems shutting down my PC. It's at the end of the day when I click on "turn off computer" nothing happens. It's strange because when my PC hasn't been running for a while it will shut down without any problems. I've been told re-installing windows is an option, any other suggestions ?

Click [Start] [Control Panel] [Performance and Maintenance] [Power Options]
The Power Options Properties Property Sheet will open.
Click the APM tab and check the box to [Enable Advanced Power Management Support]
Power Down Automatically After Shutdown I

Select the APM tab and check/uncheck [Enable Advanced Power Management Support].

It should be noted that some users have solved the shutdown problems via enabling while others have achieved success via disabling. Experimentation with the APM and ACPI settings may provide a solution.

If the procedure above didn't solve the problem, check the registry setting shown below.

Start Regedit and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Set the value of PowerDownAfterShutdown to 1.

If the value isn't present, add it by creating the string value PowerDownAfterShutdown and setting the value to 1.

Note: The success of this registry edit is dependent on Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) support.

Why shutdown, just turn off the monitor. I always just turn off the monitor. The PC I'm working on right now is on for 54 days without shutting down.

System Up Time: 54 Days, 4 Hours, 7 Minutes, 39 Seconds

Not shutting down Windows is like reusing a condom several times, it could work but its just not a good idea.

Thanks. Will try that.

I also had similar problems and have baffled with it for days now, I found the following solution on a forum which worked for me:

Fix PC that doesn’t shut down completely by right-clicking Computer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers - > double-clicking USB Root Hub -> selecting the Power Management tab -> uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power (Do this for every USB Root Hub).

Btw, my Operating System is XP x64.

next time try and spend a little bit more on a pc then you wont have these problems - u cheap dog!
