OK so I bought a new place. I am really keen on the 2MB uncapped account from MWeb and lucky me, they have a promotion on untill the end of December where on new accounts you get the first two months free! They also claim that they will cover the Telkom bill if you get the "Data & Line" package.

So anyway I called MWeb initially and they suggested that I sort out my line with Telkom first before applying for a contract. So anyway I went ahead and telkom installed an adsl line. Now because I have an adsl line installed (saving Mweb work) I can't apply for the data & line package for those first two months and can only the get the data package.

So basically I have to pay my telkom line rental, so this was falsely advertised.

The next problem is that if I dont want a debit order off my account and if I want to settle my account using EFT payments, I must pay for the first 3 months. So I said to the consultant that means I only pay for 1 month as the first 2 are free. But that is not how it works. So do i actually get anything free then??? the answer sadly is no.

Do you agree with me that this is false advertising? Should I report to the ASA?

I don't like them (the T's & C's) so my choice then is either I do a month to month or I go to someone else.

He would be complying with their terms and conditions, besides their ad online is pretty clear when it comes to the free months, they even state in the ad that they'll handle the line rental on a data+line package.

I was trying to go for that package as well and after getting the runaround i gave up and grabbed an openweb gamers delight account, but i have to say the Mweb rep on here is pretty jacked up and did try sort it out for me, the call centre don't really know what they're talking about so Maybe pm him, I'm sure he'll sort you out...

telkom line rental
You pay your telephone bill every month..

How do you not know this???

Its a seperate charge completely.

You pay for
1) Data account
2) ADSL Line

the above 2 is what Mweb are saying free for 2 months

3) Telkom Phone Line

Hi Colfree

I'd like to look into this for you, something certainly doesn't sound right.
Drop me a PM with you contact details and I will also arrange for a consultant to contact you.

Thanks

People can't read. T&C's says on condition of signing a 6 month contract and debit order. Don't bother the nice people at the ASA when you failed to investigate the deal.

Granted, the call center could have told you that they don't do NEW ADSL LINE APPLICATIONS (hence why they suggested you get the ADSL line sorted first), but they do help you to move your line over to them and take up the package.

How it sounds to me is, you got the line by yourself, applied for uncapped ADSL data package from MWEB to get data, then wanted to move to the "get 2 months free" package. It only works if you're a new client and your line gets moved to them. NB, they don't do NEW installations (they not telkom yo), they can help move the line from telkom TO them when you do sign up at MWEB though and take advantage of their special.

I agree, read my post and it might make sense of what Colfree did/what might have transpired

I am a new client, today is the first day in my life I own a landline number.

Why you so angry, you obviosly don't understand the advertising laws of the country. Anyway, I know I need to pay my telephone line but Mweb will not cover the ADSL line rental either because Telkom already set it up.

Thanks Mweb guy I will PM you.

you seem to think the 2 free months are the first 2 months...

once you have a adsl line up and running with TElkom or whoever... mweb can move the line to them, and later the 2 free months would kick in...

it's not about being a first time ASDL line holder or telephone subscriber, it's about your first time as an mweb adsl line customer...

basically, you can't read and have no leg to stand on... please don't waist your time with ASA

Ok guys I wont waste my time with ASA then.

But that is why i asked the question. solo7, I did not ask if I could read or not. So thank you for letting me know I can't.

Much appreciated.

Anyway I do feel mislead by Mweb and looking through the forums I see other people also had problems with getting the runaround by them.

So maybe Openweb is the answer.

Anyway for those who don't understand the South African law on advertising, just because something is in terms and conditions does not defend you from false advertising. In this case I am not sure if it is or isnt, but that is why the ASA can decide. That is why they are there, to protect the consumer.

OpenWeb doesn't do EFT's (yet?), so if you can get past doing a debit order, OpenWeb is your best bet. They are second to none as far as uncapped shaped accounts go. And if, for some obscure reason, they don't work for you, you can always make a move to another ISP. You can PM MrBEEP...he'll sort you out. Otherwise check out:

and have a look at what some ex-mweb/afrihosters have to say ;)

Good Day Colfree

Please provide me the account details and allow me the opportunity to look into this for you.

.

I must admit that i am not a fan of debit orders, but openweb is pretty awesome so far, haven't had any downtime and no issues with latency or download speeds... I was with axxess before, but after their switch to MTN everything went to hell, Mweb sounded appealing cause of the promo but in the end it was more hassle than it's worth, if you check out openwebs pricing they are actually really good too and generally have an account that will cater to your adsl needs rather than just a generic "uncapped" account that ends up being shaped till the cows come home.

Good luck deciding!!

Thanks for the advice to everyone. I am glad to see other people also had issues and was not just me. I am leaning towards openweb now, but will still consider Mweb as you can pay with EFT's.

As far as the debit order thing goes, I am really not a fan either. The company has power over the customer when it comes to cancelling contracts and so on.

Openweb does do EFT payments you just email them the proof of payment and an hour later you receive your account details.

Hi Guys

Signed up for the 2 free months promotion on Monday.
Just wanted to know if anyone else is having the same experience on the 10 mb uncapped account.

It performs very well as a 4mb uncapped account, never even get close to what a 10 mb should be.
I only use it at night , youtube can't stream 1080 vids , buffers alot 720 vids a little better but not by much.
Downloads running using a download accellerator runs full speed at 4mb.

To me this account is acting like a 4 mb account. Not once have a seen anything that lets me know its running at 10 mb.
Downloads that start go up to 10mb and then right back down to 3 mb / 4 mb

Anybody else having the same issues ?

I see that now. So no reason not to go with them, they are also cheaper on the Silver uncapped line.
