Not sure if this is the correct forum to post this in - if it's not, admins/mods please move this thread, and accept my apologies in advance :).

My home network looks like this:

Code:
ADSL line ---> D-Link ADSL modem ---> D-Link Switch ---> My PC
                                                 \-----> Brother's PC

The modem I am using is the D-Link DSL-300T, bought from Take2 at the end of November. The modem connects to the Internet fine, it handles downloads/P2P fine, but I can't configure it .

The instruction manual says that I should be able to access the modem's settings pages by going to 192.168.1.1 in my browser. However, when I do that all I get is a "504 gateway timeout" error. Pinging 192.168.1.1 gives me "Request timed out".

I've contacted D-Link support and they told me to do a Factory Reset on the modem (which I had already done) - this does nothing to solve the aforementioned problem. I have done everything mentioned in the modem's manual, but no joy.

Finally, ever since installing the modem and changing the computers to obtain an IP address from the modem, the Network Connection is always marked as having "Limited or no connectivity".

I'm a n00b at this sort of thing and I'm not afraid to admit it. All I want to do is configure my modem; please help!

What happens if you connect your PC directly to the modem? And then set your PC to obtain an IP address automatically ?

Check that all cables are plugged in and devices switched on.
Ping 127.0.0.1(loopback test) to test that your TCP/IP stack on your own PC is correctly installed, if not reinstall it or windows.
Can you ping your brothers PC? If yes then this means your link from the switch to the router is not working, could be the cable from the switch to router. If not then replace you cable to the switch and see if that makes a difference.
Make sure that you uses a stright trhough cable from what is labelled the uplink/internet port on the switch to router, or if there is none then a crossover from normal switch ethernet port to router.
Remove the switch and plug directly into the router and set to automatic settings and try to connect to http//192.168.1.1, if you cannot then you might have a bad router or router port interface, switch the cable from the router to you pc/switch to a different port if you have another enabled.
Then you must start thinking about replacing parts if none of that works.
That's about it, gotta go.

I originally had the modem connected directly to my brother's PC (my PC was out of action at that time)... but I had exactly the same problems.

Could you maybe do something for me?

Go into the command console and type ipconfig /all and paste what it says here.

Also you say that you are able to access the internet via this modem right? Are you using pppoe?

Hmm ok it looks like the modem's dhcp is not working correctly.
What was your network cards ip address before you set it to automatic?

Try setting your ip address manually to something like 192.168.1.10 or something.

Then try to ping 192.168.1.1

Let me know what happens.

btw Automatic ip assignment is kinda pointless if you use pppoe(what you are using) since you don't need to access the modem as a gateway, it only makes life a bit easier.

Set my PC's IP to 63.0.0.20 (what it was before I installed the modem), tried pinging 192.168.1.1, but still get "Request timed out" error. Same thing happens if I use 192.168.1.10.

Hmm so if your ip address is 192.168.1.10 and you type 192.168.1.1 in your browser it does not work, right?

If it does not work then it could be 3 possible things.

1. The cable, switch or somewhere in between is at fault.
2. The modem itself is half broken. (unlikely)
3. The ip address of the modem is not 192.168.1.1 which means that your hardware reset was unsuccessful.

I would go with no 3. I say this because I think the default mode for your modem is not bridge mode(used to be able to make a pppoe connection from your pc).
If your reset was successful you most probably would not have been able to access the internet with pppoe.

Try turning the power of the modem off and hold the reset button in for at least 15 seconds. And then try to access the modem at 192.168.1.1 with your ip being 192.168.1.10.

If that fails I'm at a loss..sorry hehe.

edit:p I suppose there could be some weird firewall setting interfering as well.

THANK YOU oober!

Forced my PC's IP to 192.168.1.10, reset the modem, tried going to 192.168.1.1 - it works :D!

Also, looking at the modem config, I think I know why I couldn't access the config page in the first place - the modem's manual says to set your PC to be a DHCP client before trying to configure it, however the modem's DHCP functionality is disabled by default. So that'll never work...

Anyway, I'm off to do some tweaking (like changing the default admin passwords...). Many thanks again for your time and patience.

BTW, that modem will do DHCP for *one* address only; hooking it up to a switch may not work correctly. I run mine via a D-Link 724+ broadband router.
