Problems with Hulu

Hi there.

I hope this is the correct section.

I am running unoDNS service, setup on my router. I then have a Netflix and hulu account.

I watch through a WD TV live media player which I put in the DMZ incase my router was somehow disrupting something. It was connected via wifi and then I changed to a homeplug as I thought the weak wifi signal was my problem anyway that didn't help.

Netflix runs fine. But my hulu will play 5 seconds then stop for 30 then play 5 sections then stop for 30 etc. Even when it's set on SD.

I have the latest firmware on the device.

I even "turbocharged" my line to see if it was a shaping issue. I have a 4meg uncapped afrihost account.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Oh what's even weirder is hulu has worked once or twice very late at night.

Afrihost(or any MTN ISP) has never been good for streaming.

Can you recommend a isp to try? Surely it should stream SD on 4meg decently?

And now. I go login on my pc and it plays fine on my pc in HD. Go downstairs to my tv and it plays fine in SD.

Tested HD 2Mb/s and it plays fine.

Tested HD 3.2Mb/s and it plays fine.

Wtf. I will test it tomorrow mid day and if it happens again. Afrihost will be getting a message from me. I have read conflicting threads about afrihosts willingness to help with hulu and netflix problems but I have been a client of theirs for about 5 years now. So they damn well better be forthcoming with support else I will be jumping ship.

Hmmm... I think I see your problem

Prepare yourself and go read the last few pages of the Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN) thread. Actually, go back more than a few pages. It's not that pretty.

EDIT: For alternatives I suggest a capped account from webafrica or vox. Seems the webafrica uncapped business accounts are also good. Crystal Web also seem quite focused on streaming.

Well I read the last few pages and most of it was complaining about getting low speeds on speed test. I always get 4meg which isn't the problem. And I don't see how it can be a shaping issue if I had "turbocharged" my line before hand. And it is also strange netflix works fine.

I have only had great service from afrihost and I hope it remains that way. I guess we will see tomorrow.

Thanks for the reply.

MWEB Business uncapped 2mb streams SD fine, but it also depends on how busy your exchange is. The fact that it runs a little better late at night seems to point to that, but Netflix running alright counts against a busy exchange. I'd investigate that before switching accounts.

Well ultimately if you're happy with Afrihost and happy with what you get for the money you pay them then don't "fix" anything. I was on one of their capped packages for a while and when streaming worked, it worked well. Though, over time, I found streaming to be way more consistent with WebAfrica. When I used Vox (myBB fatpipe voucher) I realised what pure internet "bliss" is meant to be - everything just worked all the time. I'll probably end up at Vox eventually even if it's just for their data rollover (which realistically should be on every month to month capped package out there). Currently I'm rocking a Crystal Web fusion account and will see how that goes.

In general my finding is Netflix streams better then hulu, Netflix adjusts as your line speed changes where hulu will stop and load. This happened to me with multiple ISPs. It all comes down to your quality/stability of your connection which we know is affected by multiple things.

Seems promising...

Good Evening

I hope this finds you in good spirits :)

I have looked at your account and I last night you had a few port errors in the line, so I have recreated your ports and stabilised your line
so from your side can you please switch off the device for 2 minutes while the port recreates, once the router is back on please perform*
speed test and let us know whether your speeds are better and also in regards to the Netflix and Hulu connectivity can you please provide us
with a trace route to Netflix and Hulu.

Please feel free to query further

Kind Regards

Thats not true: i had a business 4MB line and it worked like a charm

It definitely is true. You're the exception to the rule.

Go read the AH/Axxess feedback threads for the last year if you want to investigate yourself.

Protip: It's always good to research before making assumptions.
