Problems with MTN GPRS

Please advise how I can get to play with the Series 60 software to do the cell checks and to force the cell.

The EDGE data speeds should have been increased this morning for the specific cell and sector you mentioned yesterday in Sandton.

Good man MTNBB - i am on the BTS now and am getting the full 4 slots for download, and it is flying! Getting about 130kbps on a download i am busy doing from a US based web site. thank u very much for sorting this out so quickly. excellent customer service!

wrt the software - i would like to get an ok from both yourself and voda3g before i post how to manually select a tower or check the settings on the bts. its fiddly software and if u dont know exactly what u r doing, u can bugger your cell phone up. although i do realise that there are lots of techno savvy people on this forum that would benefit from this info, i dont want to be accused of messing up yours or vodas capacity planning and cell hopping. in the interim, i will pm u the how to, and once i have your go ahead, will post a how to. that ok?
cheers -

Absolutely, I sent in my old 6150 for repair, meanwhile it was just me that forgot to unlock the phone from a tower that I used in a different town trying to set a distance record

The other problem, and I understand this is why the engineering menus can no longer be actived on most phones, is that the networks were getting technical queries from people who have more "insight" into the network. And, logically, most of tech support didn't have a clue what they were talking about.

But this function would certainly negate my need for a directional antenna. However, as you say ScrnScrm, maybe the networks don't want people locking only onto the "fast" towers, they will just become congested and slow down anyway. No more "Y'ellow Broadband" rather "Bye-bye Broadband" ;)

Yes thats correct, the Nokia 6230 is a series 40 phone. The .sis files that have been mentioned will only work on the Symbian based platform phones, i.e. the Series 60 models.

So the 6630 would be a good choice, being the latest Series 60 based product currently available in SA from Nokia.

Just for information sake, other Series 60 Nokias can be seen here:

The 6680, 3230 and 6681 will be available at MTN in the near future.

Thanks. We also currently differentiate ourselves with international bandwidth availability planning.

Our radio gurus can look at the software you mentioned and evaluate the impact on the network. It would be great if we could give individuals a way to empower themselves (especially in locking on to an EDGE) site, but this weighed against the potential impact because our congestion planning is all statistically based.

Symbian Software

depends what phone u have. i have nokia field test software that runs on symbian series 60 phones. if you have a series 60 phone, its simply a matter of loading the sis file on voila, all the info u need is available.

pssst -> there is also some neat software that allows you to force your channel/base station, so if you are roaming onto an old gprs only base station but are within range of an edge one, you can force and edge connection.. but i never told u this :D

ScrnScrm. I chatted to our engineers about this software. They are familiar with it. You are welcome to share this info with the forum. There is a benefit if you have one EDGE site in your area and want to lock onto it.

I would issue two warnings - use it at your own risk!
Also - we constantly upgrade sites and even features on sites so the best site for you today may not be the best site tomorrow! Ideally if you 'locked' onto one site you would be better off 'unlocking' occassionally and letting MTN find the best site, then doing a comparison.

GPRS Error: No Network Coverage

Hi,

In Bloemfontein City Centre I've been getting the following error intermittently over the past few days (using Nokia 9500):

GPRS Error: No Network Coverage.

However, I can phone and receive calls and have a full strength signal.

Does this mean that all GPRS channels are fully utilised or does it indicate some other problem?

Is it possible to use Channel 900 cell broadcast to check the specific sites you are on when experiencing the problem please?

"Error 679: There was no answer"

I have been dailing in to nr. *99***1# for the last two months, with no problems. Suddenly, last night I get the following message when dailing in:

"Error 679: There was no answer"

I have tried restarting my laptop and phone, but still no luck. I also have not changed any other settings.

Please help

Thanks

Have you tried dialling *99#
It will use whatever is set as the default connection on your phone.
Make sure that your phone is set to use the mymtn apn as the default...

"Error 679: There was no answer"

Hi

I have tried dailing *99#, but get the same message.

How do I check if my phone is set to use the mymtn apn as the default? I have a P900.

This is strange, because I have not changed any settings on my laptop or phone.

Thanks

Now, suddenly it works!

I have not changed anything, still dailing original number. Strange.

Thanks All

We have switched our GPRS router over to a J20, a fancy, high-capacity Juniper capable of handling the rapidly increasing data traffic (after the reduced tariffs) and the emerging 3G traffic. The 3G/EDGE/GPRS networks are being integrated for fully seamless operation and to take advantage of better functionality on the J20. Apologies if there were some quirks during the transition phase.

I also apologise for being off sick yesterday so I did send a query on this particular issue but have not seen if there was a response.

Check on the handset control panel for the various connections. There is a default option. The P900 allows a different default for each e-mail account and each wap bookmark so it's not really one default.

It's always best to make a wap connection from the handset to check the settings when the notebook connection doesn't work as wap uses low data volumes and is easier to debug.

I have posted elsewhere on the site how to start from getting the wap settings sent automatically to the handset, through to checking the various gprs settings using the Control Panel on Windows and Modem Diagnostics.

Need 4 Speed

I just realised reason im getting rather good speeds on my nokia 6260, it seems to have 4+1slots :_)

Clispe, are you using you 6260 for GPRS with those speeds?

Hi MTNBB,

The last couple of weeks I’ve been having trouble with my MTN GPRS connection that I've been using via my PC with my SamsungX600. My connection would seem as if it is still connected both on the PC and the phone’ [G]’ , but the connection would be 'dead'-no new websites loading etc. etc.

It's not like the connection was idle for to long as it happened tonight while I was downloading a rather large file! I've also noticed a slowdown in the general speeds of my GPRS in the last few weeks.

My remedy would then be to 'disconnect' and wait a while before trying to reconnect again-and sometimes this new 'connection' is also 'dead' immediately after I connect.

Is this normal, do MTN have an Idle disconnect policy, and are there a time/data limit for any given GPRS connection?
My ch#900 mainly shows tower :2239A/HARBOUR ISLAND
Thanx
Lourens

Hi MTNbroadband. I have a bit of a prob;

I use ws_ftp to upload data to a server containing a website that I maintain (usually from a telkom line). Now however, I need to upload using mtn. Unfortunately, I am unable to upload to the server using ftp on mtn's network with the gprs/edge connection.

Can anyone, including MTNBB, provide a possible reason?
