Yo Guys,

At the moment I'm running on a 56k modem and waiting for Telkom to come and install my new ADSL line...

The problem is, a few months ago, my phone line started to make weird static/scratchy noises and it was very hard to hear someone on the phone.
This problem also gave me hastles with my modem as it dials-up through the telephone line
I would only get very slow connections eg. 14,4 kbps.
It still gives me these problems and I've checked all connections and even called a techie in too have a look...he replaced some rusted part of the line but the problem still persists

If anyone can help me with this it will be much appreciated...

Secondly, will this problem interfere with my ADSL connection when that line gets installed?

Question is, did this happen before or after you ordered ADSL? If it is the latter, your line has probably already been converted to ADSL and you'll need a microfilter on the line when hooking up your telephone and/or modem. These are available at any Telkom or good telephone store. You'll just need to use this until they actually 'activate' your line for ADSL.

Not so, if u have a adsl line with a phone connected directly to it u will here the normal sound. If u have an adsl modem/router connected and syncing to ur line and ur phone still connected without a filter then ull here the high pitched frequency. If its a loud scratchy noise id log a call with Telkom because the adsl frequency is very low and can still be talked over.

I had a similar problem with my phoneline a few months before my ADSL installation. I phoned customer care and kept on pushing until a competent techie got here (don't flame me, thank God they do exist). He told me it is water in the ducts, lying there for months and rotting the casings that causes the noise. He then put a noisy instrument on my line and traced the fault and in his own words "put the line on the other side". Well, that fixed it and I've been on ADSL for more than a year now. Chances are you're not going to get any good speeds on your line with that kind of noise. In actual fact, I doubt it will pass the initial quality test.

I think you've actually on to something here Dearheart. :)

Over the past few months, it hasn't been giving me trouble, but now whenever it rains, the line goes really bad, so i think its something to do with the water getting in somewhere :)

I'll see what i can do...;)

Maybe when the ADSL installation guys come, they can fix the problem
