Hi

I'm unable to get email from Gmail using Thunderbird.
I've checked and double checked the gmail setting (pop enabled etc.) I got the right port settings and details setup in Thunderbird and I'm still not able to get my mail. I've got a mac and a Telkom Marconi ADSL wifi router. I thought perhaps certains ports are blocked at the router level....Gmail has nonstandard port requirements...and is there a way to unblock them? Incidentally I've also installed Adium (chat client) and I've also had not luck there too connecting to Gtalk, despite the settings being correct.

Help!

Hi,

I highly doubt your router has factory settings of blocking mail ports. Could you elaborate what Thunderbird says (timeout, cannot find the host?)?

One thing you can try is use the HTTP login and see if via the main Gmail interface your GTalk is working.

If you wish, you could also try connecting to mail.google.com on port 25 via telnet and see what that returns.

I have tried now using my Thunderbird and it works fine connecting to Gmail (I didn't try sending mail, though). I am on SAIX.

Good luck!

popping problems

Hey

I get "pop.gmail.com timeout"

I don't know much about SAIX. If I change firefox proxy to SAIX:8080 my ADSL doesn't work at all!

I'll try telnet through my ftp client - although Gmail is quite specific about their port settings.

Any other ideas? :)

Thanks, Mustafa

Hi,

You mustn't use telnet via an FTP client, you should use your OS's telnet (Windows == telnet), therefore the command would be "telnet o mail.google.com 25" via a command prompt.

Have you tried the HTTP GTalk method I described above? Could you see your friends, etc?

Best wishes

As far as I know google doesn't use the standard ports, they use secure ports

Indeed they do. Make sure you have Secure connections enabled on your POP and SMTP server settings. Also - I have actually seen that the default settings on the Telkom router blocks secure mail for some bizarre reason. Just turn of the firewall and check if it works - then turn it back on and open up the correct ports.

Have you followed these first steps?

- Log in to your Gmail account.
- At the top of any Gmail page, click Settings.
- In the Mail Settings window, click Forwarding and POP.
NOTE: Gmail is turning on POP3 support for users in phases. If Forwarding and POP does not appear, your Gmail account cannot be configured for POP3 support.
- In the POP Download section, select Enable POP or all mail or Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on.
- Click Save Settings.

Your mail client needs to support POP3 via https, if it doesn't then POP3 download won't work.

I know this applies to the Microsoft SBS Exchange POP3 connector, so it may be the cause of your problem too.

Hey!

Thanks all your advice guys. I was mucking about with my router config and found that they do have a list of unblocked ports! I simply added 587 & 995 to the list of ports and voila! All working!

In case this problem is encountered again:

1. 10.0.0.2 to login to the router
2. click Configuration then firewall
3. scroll down and click Securiy Policy Configuration
4. There are 3 options: the first one should be Interface type 1:External, and Interface type 2: internal, this is the one you want.
5. click Port Filters
6. Scroll down and click Add TCP or UDP Filters
7. Then just change the Destination port start and end to whatever port you need.

Phew..this problem has been bugging for ages now!
