i am using uttracestar and over the past couple of days i have noticed that my connection keeps hopping between primrose(which is my main bs), several unknown towers, and far of places with 1/10 signal(kilarny,soweto,edenvale,kyalami...)

this hopping occurs on average every 20 seconds.
i am using a directional antena and have tried moving it around, but this does not help at all?

does anyone know of a solution for this?

If moving the arial doesn't help then either the arial is not elevated enough or not making a good connection on the connectors or you just live in a really really horrible place where towers signals are bouncing off everything.

Need more info...

Hi FD

I had a similar issue, the overloaded tower’s signal was stronger than the closer usable towers signal.

Please give me some info: where your antenna is placed, what surrounds it, what is the signal strength of both towers, what is the angle between them and your antenna, what type of antenna are you using.

If you have google earth can you map all three locations, indicating distance and can you take a digital image of your antenna from 10 meters away?

I'll try and help...

dunno if it will help but apparently the latest firmware helps tower hopping issues - this is available from iburst.co.za.

kyalami is very very very far from edenvale. those are the craziest results i have seen.

My antenna is on a pole just above the gutter of my roof (double story building) its looking over some trees at the bottom of my garden, i dont think these are the problem.

this is a list of towers that hve connected in 1 hour this morning:

6,Primrose Hill(Bedfordview),-91,-84,-80,345,24,7,2,8/10 Very Good
27,Illovo (Laudergate),-122,-121,-120,3,9,3,0,1/10 Signals from Space are Better
50,Unknown,-122,-121,-121,2,34,10,0,1/10 Signals from Space are Better
31,Vorma Valley,-122,-121,-120,10,9,3,0,1/10 Signals from Space are Better
43,Unknown,-122,-121,-119,3,0,0,0,1/10 Signals from Space are Better
39,Unknown,-122,-120,-120,6,7,2,0,1/10 Signals from Space are Better
11,Forest Hill,-121,-120,-119,5,3,1,0,1/10 Signals from Space are Better

63,Unknown,-122,-121,-121,7,0,0,0,1/10 Signals from Space are Better
42,Unknown,-122,-122,-122,1,31,9,0,1/10 Signals from Space are Better
21,Roodekrans,-121,-121,-121,1,25,8,0,1/10 Signals from Space are Better
26,RandParkRidge,-122,-121,-121,3,19,6,0,1/10 Signals from Space are Better
2,Northcliff JW,-122,-121,-121,4,39,12,0,1/10 Signals from Space are Better
23,Edenvale Mall,-122,-121,-121,8,30,9,0,1/10 Signals from Space are Better
16,Kyalami Castle,-121,-117,-115,12,29,9,0,1/10 Signals from Space are Better

so its not hopping between two towers with similar strenghts its just picking up towers with no signal in all directions!

I am using the black desktop modem, is there new firmware for it?

What is happening is you are loosing all signal all together from primrose at times. This is not the general case of tower swapping.

Once the UTD cannot see primrose it connects to whatever tower it can.

We had a similar problem before, it was worse the more windy it got. It is probably a reflected signal you are getting check whether you are actually pointing the arial in the correct direction according to the map.
