Problems with WAN miniport (PPPOE)

I just got ADSL implemented by Telkom at home. When attempting to connect to ADSL it would say "connecting through WAN miniport (PPPOE)..." and it would just stall there. After a while, it would display the error message, "remote computer not found". I am currently using Windows XP professional. Can anyone assist me with this as Telkom helpline told me it is a Microsoft protocol problem and Microsoft told me that if I can do a normla dialup, then it is not their problem. I am sitting inbetween being unable to use ADSL at all. Any assistance will be appreciated.

Do uou have a "Ticket no" or TT no? for you encounter with the helpdesk?

If so, publish it here - Possibly the big shots at Telkom will take note.

Otherwise, phone the helpdesk again, get the TTno and publish it here.

Although Telkom claims that this forum has no impact, ADSL has improved over the past weeks.

Just a few things to check on your dial-up connection:
1. Security tab: must "allow unsecured password"
2. Networking tab: PPPOE selected as type of broadcast conenction. IP selected. None of the others selected.
3. If you've got a firewall active, make sure that's not interfering.

Hi All

I have exactly the same problem - They installed 2 days ago and I have tried nearly every concievable setting with no luck - I have spoken to Telkom support and M-web support and each blames the other. Today, they told me to go and hire an independant networking company to sort out the connection between the Router POTS and the Ethernet card...I ask you???!!!
I have tried conncting on three different pc's at home and all give the same error - the pc is not able to access the router at all - tried Ping 192.168.10.200 (default), tried uninstalling and reinstalling netwotking in X Pro, nothing seems to work. Have checked the patch cables and tried both crossover and normal patch cables.
Funny thing is that there is nothing wrong with the Ethernet connection on the PC - I can network my home PC's together with no problems. When I try to open the IExplorer configuration/setup for the POTS Router, all I get is "page not found" error - tried setting up as NIC and still get same error - the router cannot be accessed to be set up...

I am at my wits end as I have run out of ideas to try - Telkom swears that the line is active and M-Web swears that the service is active - but now the PC WILL NOT see the router.

ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE.......I need to use this - 56k is just too much now...

Hi Howard, ok, lets start from the top. Here's a description of how I linked up the POTS router. I've got 2 network cards in my box. 1 for the link to my home network, the other dedicated for the router. My network range is 223.100.100.xxx and I have 12 PC's connected to a switch.

I've designated one machine as my gateway for the network and thats the one with the 2 nic's and the router connected to it. If you were using a netgear router, all you'd have to do is connect to the router through http:// 192.168.0.1 and perform the setup, supplying your username and password in the settings. The Marconi POTS router is slightly different. I couldn't get it working in router mode so I had to create a PPPoE dialup. To do this, I created a new connection to the internet and specified it to set it up manually. I then selected the second setting "Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password" a.k.a PPPoE. You then have to specify your ISP username and password and then connecting up shouldn't be a problem. I remember that the only time I could access the routers settings through http:// 192.168.10.200 was once I connected up to the internet - pretty screwed up eh?

Guys, pls note that when setting up your own internal networks that there are reserved IP's for private networks and these should be used ...

For Class A network, 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix) range (For big network that requires a huge pool of 16 million private IP addresses)

For Class B network, 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix) range (For medium-sized network that requires 65000 private IP addresses)

For Class C network, 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix) range (Commonly used IP range on smaller network for easier addressing of 254 IP addresses. May not necessarily be smaller network but network managed in smaller blocks.)

If you're having problems connecting thru your ADSL router and it supports DHCP then select the option

Optain an IP address automatically

on the TCP/IP properties page for your ethernet card. This should set up your machine with the correct default gateway information at startup.

Couple of things:

avh: I got my ADSL started using XP Home on my laptop, so I don't know what *** they're talking about MS protcol problems. It worked first time. We might be able to help if you can tell us what kind of ADSL modem you've got. If you've got the Telkom Ethernet one try typing 'ping 192.168.10.200' into a command prompt and tell us what answer you get.

howardb: Do your ethernet cards handle 10base-T (10Mbps)? The router won't operate in 100base-T mode.

I use my desktop box as a router now, it's got two cards and Linux. I wanted to do it this way anyway so my own network runs at 100Mbps...

Hi all...thanks for all the advice...

Quazzi & seanl- I tried as you mentioned and still get the same error 678 after trying to connect on the pppoe connection I made.

To make things simpler for myself, I decided to ditch the network hub and connect directly to my ethernet card via Cat5 crossover cable - just until I can access the settings in the Marconi ADSL router. I have done the following and still no joy.

1. uninstalled the network card and rebooted, then re-installed with up-to-date drivers.

2. Into control panel / network connecions - right clicked Local Lan Connection / properties - (ethernet card is realtek rtl8139/810x famil pci fast ethernet NIC - configured the Link Speed/Duplex Mode as 10 Half Mode). TCP/IP properties set as obtain automatically for IP and DNS. Press OK and back to Network Connections box.

3. New connection wizard -> connect to internet -> manual setup -> connect using broadband with user/pass(pppoe) -> enter ISP name (M-Web) -> enter user/pass for ISP ( and leave user account for anyone using PC / make default Internet connection / turn off Internet Firewall -> Finish

4. Marconi ADSL Router POTS power on and reset -> double click on above connection just made - Message "Connecting through WAN Miniport (PPPOE)" -> "error message 678: remote computer did not respond".

They say the Marconi is set up for DHCP,so have left my LAN settings as auto.

I have checked points 1 to 3 as you suggested and all are as per these settings...

Have tried this from the CMD PROMPT and get the following...

C:\ping 192.168.10.200
Pinging > with 32 bytes of data:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)

I seem to be doing everything according to the way everyone else has done, but to no joy... I know 100% that my ethernet port is working as I can network my other PC's together no problems... I have also tried installing another NIC and have the same problem...
O/S is WinXP Pro [Version 5.1.2600] SP1a running on a gigabyte Ga7VRXP m/board (integrated LAN).

any other suggestions very welcome....

Ok, everything as described in your previous post is set up correctly. Check your router when you power it on, If I remember correctly there are 5 lights: Power, LAN, LAN Link, DSL, DSL Link. When you connect up, make sure that you have a LAN and DSL Light, the link lights should flash now and then. So in total, you should have 3 lights burning continously when everything has sync'd and connected.

My feeling is that you're not waiting for the router to sync before trying to connect. Switch on the router, wait for the DSL and LAN lights to burn continuously and then try again - it should take anything from 30 seconds to 1 minute after you've switched on the router.

If this doesn't work - then I have a feeling there may be something wrong with either your router or your line. Your setup is 100% correct, I don't think its software. The fact that pinging the router returns Host Unreachable means that you're getting a link through software but that you're not getting a response through the hardware

I have double checked the lights on power up and they show as you mentioned - 5 lights: Power, LAN, LAN Link, DSL, DSL Link. I have the LAN and DSL Lights, and the link lights flash now and then. I have the 3 lights burning continously when everything has sync'd and connected - no luck = still the same error message....
I have a feeling that it is the ADSL router Telkom installed as it doesn't work with any of my PC's (1 x win98 setup, 1 x XP pro setup and 1 x laptop XP Pro setup) - I would understand 1 of them not working, but not all three!!
Anyways, I have demanded that Telkom pop in tomorrow morning with the technician + his laptop to check out the line and the router...let's see what happens.

Hi all...

Finally got up and running - Telkom technical came and tested everything to find that the ADSL Router was faulty. They replaced it and now am flying along with no problems...

If anyone has this problem in furture, just DEMAND that Telkom replace the router...it saves all the backwards and forwards and calls.

I had that problem, but with a dlink router. I had to stick it on bridged mode for it to accept pppoe connections from the windows dialer thing.

Take the tick out of auto DNS and type as primary DNS 196.25.255.34, then secondary type 196.25.255.3

I'm using a planet ADSL router that is connected to a switch. I've got 7 pc plugged into the switch, all getting DHCP and everything from the router - its pretty cool. The only thing is that I need to manually forward ports to my client PC's via the Virtual Server interface.

Now, I've seen these Marconi CrapDSL four port routers, well, one of them, set up like a modem. You have to go to "Connect to" on the Start menu, and connect like a modem.

I've got 2 questions:
1) I suppose this setup eliminates the need for "port forwarding"? So how would I set up my planet router like this?
*1.b*) Anyone done this in Linux?

2) Can these telkom PunyOverlyTruly**** modems be set up to work like my router?
