since yesterday I have a strange problem. About 80% of my connctions are timing out. Pings, locally and international are timing out. Even connections to my router are timing out sometimes.

I have checked UUNET and Telkom, there is actually no known problem.
tcpiq gives me excellent speeds.

There must be a problem with my machine. Router, Ethernet Card, Settings or both, etc.

Router is a DLink 504T Lan is a Realtek

Any advise or help on that?

Silly question time ... was any setting changed or new software installed ???.

IMHO a Realtek is a crap ethernet card but discrete components don't fail like that.

I suspect your router needs a reboot ???.

The router has been recently changed, because the old was broken... thats it...but the settings were restored as they were...I have made a backup.

Reset the router to it's default state and then manually reconfigure it to your requirements.

That's a real tough one, because there's so many variables involved.
I'd be inclined to go along with Tibby's advise.

The reason being, the problem has only started since you've got the new router ?

Try putting it in bridged mode to see what happens - then you'll know for sure that it's either a problem with your router settings, or with your network card.

The problem started with the new router, yes. Bridged mode? Can you explain a bit, please. I not very familiar with routers. I only had DSL-modems with a hub before.

Thanks so far!!!

I forgot something, since the problem started I have on top an additional problem. Each time I connect to bittorrent or emule, I can forget totally about surfing or even call up my mails.

Celemasiko - bridged mode pretty much means your router becomes a modem with no routing functionality - IOW, a no traffic filtering.

So you'll obviously want a software firewall running and of course, you don't want to be online too long ! :D

Every router has some setting somewhere to put it into bridged mode - usually it's just a simple checkbox somewhere in the config.

ok, point taken *gg*

XP SP2 Firewall is disabled, Router as Hardware- and Bitdefender as Software Firewall are on. I will look for the bridge function now. Keep you informed.

I found bridgefilters which can be enabled, but asked me for source mac, destination mac, protocol and mode....

Bridged mode is found on the router interface...
With the d-link log onto the router and select setup at the top. Then click the Connection 1 button twice. Under Type, select Bridge.
Now your router is set up to be a modem.

Now in windows setup a new Dialup connection (broadband) with ur username and password.

Thanks for the moment. In bridge-mode it is functioning normal. But the download speed is still poor. Does that means the router is faulty again? How to act further now?
