Hi there,

Finding it hard to find the right keywords to use in searching for what I'm looking for so I thought I'd see if any of the local users here had suggestions:

I work for the product division of my company (recent move), I'm looking for a way to collect our product information and it's technical specifications. I'm imagining a database of some sort would be the best way of doing this but as I have little database experience I'm looking for a sample DB to hack at to get what I want.

First prize would be a Jooma/CMS type component to manage this but if I get the database side working I'm hoping to get develop this myself.

Any help, suggestions would be appreciated.

Any job worth doing is worth doing right. Having to "hack" something together is going to waste your time in the future when your business needs outgrows the flexibility (or lack thereof)

What you need to ask yourself (and please tell us) is:

What do I want to accomplish by doing this?
What benefit would it be to me and/or the company to do this?
Who will be using this and for what purposes?

Answer those questions and I'll try and come up with a better non-generic answer than to go "use this... " or "just do it in excel"

Remember, if its business critical and/or will make a huge impact on processes in terms of streamlining it for the business I'm sure they won't mind shelling out a few extra bucks to get custom development for a system like that that is flexible enough (and cheap enough/easy enough to change) to suit you

I realize not everyone has the money but if you accomplish this it would be best to look at that alternative. I've known guys struggling for months to get some "hack" to work with new needs/wants and ended up going slightly insane because of it.
