So this past few days I figured I'd roll 2 more characters. The first was my bank toon (but because I gave him a nice name I always figured I'd level him someday)

Welcome Gnome Warrior level 9

But I kind of missed the healing powers my druid has (very nice not stopping every 5 min for a drink or a bite to eat if your bandages run out)

So Welcome my Dranei Paladin Level 6

Now both of them has obvious race specific traits. Gnome = Engineering and Dranei = Gem Cutting.

I was wondering what profession and/or gathering I should get with these characters?

My druid has Alchemy and Herbalism. I've mostly just leveled him and not taken the time to actually level his skills, so I'm finding it quite mundane leveling them at a high level... (even though its fun watching 4 level 9's attack me and I just stand there with my Thorn's pwning them haha)

So which professions do you think I should take up? What goes with engineering? And wtf can I use engineering for anyway?

Same goes for gem cutting... guys jewelcrafting goes with it (or am I remembering the wrong words here).

I'm putting together my own guild :D (Guild already started and will feature all my alts)

I figured if I'm going to turn wow geek I might as well do it properly.

Engineering is fun to asplode things i find :P works well with priests and rogues, and gives all classes a nice headpiece :P My priest is an engineer, most ppl don't expect a healer to be packing explosives :)

For engineering you will need mining and skinning, and for jewelcrafting you need mining.

I

i would recommend enchanting on your main toon. its imba helpful to be able to de in dungeons and, once you get there, de unwanted epix :D also you can make a load of gold just from de'ing greens and farming the odd instance

My 1st char is on 66 ... both gathering professions. Mining is a winner. I'm on 4000g now, so I figured i'd roll an alt with crafting skills to check it out. My draenai pally has Blacksmithing (for gear) and jewelcrafting (coz i luuurve the shiny objects and so do the draenai)

Ultimately - roll the type of crafting skill that you will ENJOY most! I find it fascinating to make stuff in JC and BS ... maybe one day i'll put herbs and alch on my lvl 1 druid :)

Don't worry to much about the racial specials, it does help a bit at the start but it all evens out in the end.
Unless you have tons of money, you will need gathering professions with your selected professions.
Engineering and mining
Jewelcrafting and mining
Blacksmith and mining
Leather working and skinning
Alchemy and herbalist
Tailoring and Enchanting, can be done without any secondary proffesion.

All the skills have some nice perks, but most of the times you can get by without any of those.
Herbalist and Alchamy, in my opinion are really great to have and you can always keep your supply of potions and elixers up. (plus it is cheaper that having to buy potions and elixers off the auction house)

Jewelcrafting is nice post level 60 for cutting your own gems, but gems are rather cheap anyway and you dont need a gem a day! so the only perk you really have here is a nice trinket.

Enchanting, well others can enchant all your stuff, and again you dont need enchants on a daily basis. The enchants on rings etc is quite nice for casters and healers (such as your paladin) but you have to decide if + stats enchants on your rings are worth it...

Engineering, I like to think of engineering as a fun profession, with all its bombs, mechanical sheep, etc etc. The epic head piece are nice as well, but epics from raids surpass it fast.

Blacksmithing, nice to have but same as engineering helm, the craftables can be replaced fast

Leatherworking, have drums! And tailoring are for cloth peeps.

In most cases, I would recomend take 2 gathering professions, and drop one later on for a crafting profession.

Mining and Herbalism = Pure Gold making machine.

Only problem is if you don;t have a very detailed and wide Gatherer addon, it is bitch as the 2 (Find Ores/Find Herbs) can't be used at the same time.

But because we have active farmers in our guild, I have no problem with finding any of them at any given time. I'm raking in gold like no ones business.

Once my bags are full, I scan AH and drop my ores and Herbs, all sold out by the next morning I log on. All this while lvl'ng. I'm now lvl 60, bought my Epic mount skill and still have 300+ Gold. And I enchant every piece of gear I get, I spent 500g just on crusaders x2 yesterday :D

Yea I was thinking of having a "packhorse" where that char only does gathering at all times during it's leveling periods. And then have another that only does crafting.

I reckon then I can drop Herbalism on my Druid and exchange that for Enchanting to DE stuff because it's my main and will hopefully (soon) be joining in raids.

Um, well, thats if I can join in raids without being in the guild :) would hate to leave my own guild :D

I did just that ... my main is lvl 67 rogue. As I mentioned, I have mining/skinning on it and I'm sitting on about 4000g now.

I rolled my pally to start JC and BS just for me to experience it for a change, what's nice about this is any mats that are required for low lvl toons to lvl their skill i can easily farm with my rogue with zero resistance from mobs. Within 2 days my lvl 10 pally went from 0 - 150/150 in Blacksmithing and Jewel crafting ... my only problem now is I have to reach lvl 20 before I can advance my skills :P

If you haven't done it yet, mining is a real money maker... I sell a stack of ore for 20-40g and while questing you get tons of it. Having said that, I sold my 1st stack of heavy clefthoof leather for 160g over the weekend.

I quite enjoy the crafting aspect of the game. At lvl 13 I can already make a couple of blue items! So I always wonder how it wouldve been if i did the old favourite: Skinning and leatherworking for my rogue.

But yar i agree ... if you do crafting ... do consumables. i.e. engineering or alchemy. Everyones always looking for potions etc. I dont see the point in levelling a skill that costs you 3000g to max, then you make 1 item that costs you another 1000g in mats ... and then you run gruul's lair and replace it.
