Hi all, I'm about to sign up for a medical aid, the broker has recommended Profmed Pro Active Plus plan. Is there anyone using them and how is your experience? I'm just afraid of paying for something that when I need it won't be useful.

I am on the Proactive Plus plan. I have had to claim for surgery before, was hassle free. The R3000 day to day benefit thing is a nice "bonus" for a hospital plan. I would also consider Cape Medical Plan for a hospital plan, they cover 1 MRI per year and unlimited pathology.

I have no complaits and the day to day benefit on is a nice bonus on a plan priced similar to some of Discovery's hospital plans.

Thanx for the reply I was worried about the profmed tarrif and negotiated tarrif. Do you have a gap cover.

The "100% or 200%" cover thing is mostly the same across the board for medical aids. Actually finding out how much that is you have to go back to the now non-existent Department of Health’s National Health Reference Price List (NHRPL) from 10+ years ago and add the "we now cover x% more!" increases every year. I don't know why they hide the actual values on purpose.

Either way they negotiate rates with the hospital groups, so that part is usually fully covered. In my experience, "200%" cover gives you 2/3 coverage for a good surgeon and even less for anaesthesiologist.

I have Stratum's max plan for gap cover.

I was also looking at discovery saver plans but seems like profmed is better. Do you have a gap cover and what the biggest bill you had that they paid fully.
