Are there any progressive rock/metal fans around here?

From http://www.progrockandmetal.net/progressive_music_definition.htm

In each and everyday musical conversational exchanges, the mention of the term “progressive rock” or “progressive metal” will result in blank stares that generally lead to the question, “What is progressive music?”... Newcomers to the genre seem to frequently ask this question in prog discussions. More so, each person seems to either add more or less to the definition...

More in the link above. I can honestly relate to the blank stares. Very seldom do I encounter someone who has heard of the term progressive rock or progressive metal. It is my favorite genre though so should anyone ask me what music I like I usually end up running through a list of bands they have never heard of :) until I mention Pink Floyd then there is the aha! moment.

While the definitions may vary I do find myself feeling as though there is much more going on technically with prog rock/metal. The typical verse/chorus/verse/chorus structure falls away and you're left with more of a journey or story driven experience in music. At times it can be quite abstract or openly incorporates unique elements that expands the band's musical repertoire and freedom to perform.

Some of my favorites include:

Dream Theater
Epica
Porcupine Tree
Symphony X
Circus Maximus
Within Temptation
Riverside
Kamelot
Rush
IQ
Queensryche

This music isn't for everyone but if you do find yourself curious to discover more and read up on these bands take a look at http://www.progarchives.com/

I believe there are those who were very p'd off with Phil Collins and the direction he took with Genesis after Peter Gabriel. Is there some merit there?

lol yes, the Genesis of Phil Collins are considered sell-outs focused more on mainstream success... but they pulled off some good stuff, "second home by the sea" on the "Genesis" album is considered a prog-rock classic...

Even Jeremy Clarkson a known prog-rock and old Genesis fan conceded to this.

Steven Wilson

Enjoy! Steven Wilson, the lead vocals / guitar has produced some of Opeth's albums in the past. He's good buddies with Michael Akerfeldt.

Rush(Can), Marillion(Brit), Camel(Brit), Eloy(German) , Saga(Can)...

to be continued...

Not at all. The drumming is reminiscent of Peart's style and high pitched lyrics too.
Ok, my apologies for sounding sarcastic.. but I really like Rush, and I really like Shadow Gallery, and they are 2 very different bands/styles to me:thumbsup:
