I formatted a PC and installed Windows XP on it. It's currently just Windows XP without any service packs installed (I'm still getting to that).

Now the problem is that when I download a program and attempt to run it - nothing happens. It's been like that since I installed Windows.

Today I tried to install Windows Live Messenger 2009 on it and get the following error:

"The ordinal 266 could not be located in the dynamic link library msi.dll."

Anyone have any idea wtf is up with the thing? Thanks!

if you installed xp from an old install cd that has no service packs integrated then you are bound to run into such issues when trying to install newer software simply because they have been coded to run on more updated xp installations with atleast sp2/3

Hi Lydon,

You will need to install the service packs to get things in shape, however you can try and update your Windows Installer to 3.1 - the redistribution can be found here:

If the installer need the very latest Windows Installer (very likely), then you would be better off installing Service Pack 2, as it comes with the updated version, as per:
