Programming and Math...

In the 90's one actually had to do maths to second year (applied maths 2 or stats 2 were also acceptable) in order to get a computer science degree. Now only 1st year is required (standards are slipping).

Depends on the university, it's still like that at Wits for example.

So I see. I saw that second level maths is no longer a requirement at UCT and a few others. Glad Wits is keeping the standard up. UCT also has this game dev course which allows you to do CS for 2/3rds of your 2nd year course requirements, and all of your 3rd year, which really limits the educational diversity of those students.

Hey guys

Sorry for reviving an old thread.

My problem is that I was always quite good at maths and I enjoyed it too, but it all went downhill in my matric year for various reasons. Anyway now I'm studying something that isn't math heavy at all, so I'm brushing up on my math skills via khanacademy. I'd just like to know which branches of maths would be most useful for programming.

Thanks

Discrete Mathematics and some linear algebra. There's a whole lot of topics under discrete mathematics, which include logic, graph theory, combinatorics, operations research, theory of computation, number theory, etc. If you like you can also add some cryptography, it is useful under the study of network security.

Lol sounds like a lot of work. Thanks for your reply

Sequences and series, vector spaces, set theory.

I would also include brushing up on probability and statistics.
