hello guys,

i am new to the forum and i think i have joined at the right time as i need help choosing which course or route to follow in the IT industry.

I have a programming certificate from Central University of Technology(graduated in 2004), with Visual basic 6.0,HTML and C++. I have no working experience in this field at all not even personal projects.

I have decided to study trough distance learning or part time, but I am having hard time deciding between A+,N+ courses and programming(Visual Basic.Net and any other programming tools).

Is there any advice you can give to me as to which path to take?

Your help will be much appreciated.

I'd go with the A+ courses; you have to be a very good programmer to get a job with a certificate (no one values them that much with the exception of the java and few MCTS's (or database administration)), of course experience will count towards your favour, which is not in your case; or have to know someone who knows someone.

Can't comment on A+ or N+, BUT I can tell you to stay the hell away from VB.Net. Forget it exists. You are much better off getting more experience with C++. if you need to learn a new language and want it "compatible" with the hardware stuff I'd rather go with Java.

Funny that you say stay away from vb.net when 50+ percent of programming jobs on myBB are for C#, vb.net and Asp.net?
Care to explain so that I understand your logic better?

Just VB.Net, not C#. Now you are down to maybe 10%. There are way more C# and Java jobs than VB.Net.

Spiderz my passion lies with programming. Besides the big bucks associated with it, I really want to build innovative programs.

Guys thank you for all your inputs

Now one last question for you all, which institutions would you guys recommend for me to get my Java. Because C++ and VB.net I can always refresh on them with any reputable institutions because I already have them, just need to add Java. But now the thing with Java is that, I want Introductory and Advanced levels. Most of the institutions I have googled offer introductoty levels only.

In the mean time; head over to www.thepiratebay.se and get some java stuff and PRACTICE PRACTICE and be well ACQUAINTED.

Programmers get paid very well. Well at least the php devs I work with. Even a junior dev can earn well assuming they can code. Our junior devs earn the same or more than our senior technicians. There is not much money in being a technician.

Do the Oracle Certified Java developer certificates. Especially the one covering Java EE (no idea what it is called)
