As i have had her laptop upgraded, i want to add some programs onto it for her and give it to her for xmas/passing her grade.

any suggestions?

she likes voice recording things and these girly dress up games. she says she wants an avatar but i an not 100% sure what she means by that.

she is also quite computer literate so can get lots of games off the internet on her own.

she does not know that i have had it upgraded so it will be a nice surprise when we give it to her with some cool programs on too.

thanks.

If you want to leave her unattended with internet access you can give Glubble (a browser addon) a try. Restricts access to approved sites only.

As for Avatar I know there is a program on TV now that my 9 year old boy likes that is called Avatar : The last Airbender. Not sure if she is referring to this?

Why does she get rewards for passing? I want those!! Was failing ever an option for her?
Avatar? Besides the pic in the corner of our profiles I dont know what she is talking about.
And games/programs... eh... there must be some barbie dress up games available?
And long lost 4th cousin from her fathers side, Just_Ice would also like to wish her merry christmas in advance. (Or just tell her then) :D As a gift she can join the YL when ever she likes :D

Merry christmas in advance to Sir Lancelots son, Prince Lancelot too.

thanks man, we trust her on the web but i understand what you are saying and will have a look at that option. as for the avatar thing i also don't think she means the one on tv but maybe a Sims sort of programme of sorts.

I suggest that you make a cosmetic change to the laptop by painting it with her favourite colour, you could also permanently paint her name on the cover, it will do wonders, just get a professional to do the painting.

As far as programs are concerned, sorry dood I cannot help

my sis has a girly dress up/modelling game called jojo's fashion show, keeps her entertained

hmmm i think i saw that name somewhere.

you guys have given me an idea to maybe go to these sites on her laptop and add them to her favourites list so she can choose what she wants.

na good idea indeed. my brother is doing spray painting now but somehow i think thats not gonna work on a laptop, but a good idea non the less.

I know kids don't like edutainment type toys in general, but these days, the programs can be fun and the final product can be quite rewarding. Why not try something unique like identifying a skill or interest she has (maybe photography, music, movies) and getting an applicable program (photoshop, fruityloops, adobe), and pay for a course to show her the ins and outs of the program. That IMO is a gift that she can enjoy learning about considering she already has an interest in it, and contributes towards her future in a positive way.

Or you could just buy her a bunch of games - but I reckon she'd have just as much fun going this route. It also makes gift occasions easier, as if she does show a keen interest in say photography, you could then get her a new lens, or new camera for her birthday; or for music she could take various lessons and you could get her a MIDI keyboard; for movies maybe a video camera etc etc. IMO edutainment can be a lot more fun than it was back in the pre-pc days and doesn't have to be boring, like my memories of it. But then again, I don't have kids, I just remember my days of growing up. And since I became a music producer, I have regretted not getting involved in the production side from a younger age. Maybe she is a bit young though, but you'd know better about that...

Damn I don't want you as my Dad! You'd have me out earning an income by age 15! :)

16 - the law says so...:(

I see the humorous side, and I bet none of you expected a post like that from me of all people, but I'd try to get my kids actively involved in something they enjoy and is productive in some way. Once they're old enough that is. Kids need to be kids though. However as long as he/she/it enjoys what they're doing, I have no problem - I won't push it though - it's their decision whether they want to pursue it or not...

was thinking those exact thoughts too as she is a quick learner but yes i will read through your idea again and see what i can come up with. thanks man.

"avatar kids dress up game" got a lot of results on Google.

This one was about right I would think "Avatar Arena" :

http://www.dailydressupgames.com/dress-up-games/1055/Avatar-Arena.html

Or this "Avatar Star Bin" :

http://www.dressupgames8.com/flashgames/boy-dress-up/Avatar-Star-Bin.html

But these are all online games. Not sure if you can get them standalone. Did not look carefully enough! :)

thats it then, thanks man i know she plays most of her games online anyway. i will check out the links when she is not around.

thanks Lance

Im pretty sure it's 15. So there is reason for you to be happy.
I prey for your (future) kids DJK.
I was surprised to wayne, that was the closest thing to DJK being helpful that I have ever seen :D

Gimp is nice - its like photo shop, and its free. Maybe she will like to play around with pictures and change it and stuff?

thanks Niccia, good idea i might have it on a disc somewhere here and she does like drawing and writing stories.
