Is there any good freeware available for project management? I have found a few through google, but thought maybe someone has experience with some of them.

I have had good results with GanttProject. I also liked dotproject for team management although haven;t used it in a while.

There are tons. But none are particularly good. It is one of the weaker areas of OSS
