Projector Help

Hi guys I need some help, trying to set up a projector for someone its an LG DLP model - now all I get when i plug it in via the vga cable is a picture of the desktop - no icons etc - now in safe mode it works so I am assuming it some graphics problem somewhere - what is the obvious I am overlooking...
