Projector Screen Alternatives?

You can have a look at Screen Goo
Which projector did you buy?

Oh, and btw, I haven't forgotten about posting a screen shot (although I suppose you don't need it anymore) I'm still waiting for my camera to return from holiday with a family member.

If you go to the Screen Printers, or signage guys, they should be able to sell you Vinyl. Its in a sheet form and you get white, black, black one side, white the other. Also different gloss finishes, and the various vinyls allow for different colour seepage. Maybe worth a try.

I read somewhere that the screen goo stuff is just regular white paint marketed as projector screen paint... Dont know how true that is, but similar paint sourced locally comes at a heavty price tag of around 3k...

I bought the Optoma HD20 Full HD projector. I'm thinking of just painting my wall white with regular paint for now... Not sure which paint i should use though... Should i use a regular matt paint or something glossy. I went to the hardware store over the weekend and browsed through the paint section... I see Plascon makes a satin sheen paint which has a 20% gloss rating and gives a suade finish.... I want to make sure which paint I should get before buying it...

How you finding the HD20? Mine arrives on Thursday - so also looking into screens now.

Its awesome. Clocked about 160hours already in 2months (Mostly during the World Cup). Projecting a 162' screen. The only issue i have which i cant find a solution for is that i sometimes get a static screen when i switch my projector on, but re-syncing with the source seems to rectify it.

Since my last post I've invested in a pretty good sound system and painted the wall white with Plascon Cashmere paint and it looks pretty decent to me with a few adjustments to the contrast and brightness etc...

Yeh - I see you actually get paint specifically for projectors :) Still deciding what to do screenwise, I think I might just go with a painted hardboard inititally.

My sound system is already sorted, I just had lounge suite and projector outstanding... By Friday everything should be running :)

I read somewhere that projector paint is just a gimmick and that its just ordinary paint with a hefty price tag. Not sure how true that is

I'm still in the process of completing my setup. I'm getting a unit built around my screen to act as a border, once that's done I'm gonna install dimable down lights around the room and maybe change the carpet and lounge suite, but doing everything one at a time:) Should take about a year to complete.

My current setup is as follows, once everything arrives
Speakers:
2x Polk Audio RTi A9
1x Polk Audio CSi A6
2x Polk Audio FXi A6

Receiver:
Onkyo TX-NR 807 - I want to put the floorstanders and center on their own amp eventually.

Video:
Optoma HD20
Samsung Series 5 46" LCD

Sources:
HD-PVR
PS3
Media Center - going to get a media player, and convert the media center to a media server.

My lounge is a nice rectangle of 5.7m x 4.2m... Its currently tiled but I hope to have wooden floors in the next month or three.

I just bought this lounge suite for the room - its not pretty, but its damn comfortable - they're all reclineable.

Nice setup. So far my setup includes the following:

Optoma HD20 ceiling mounted

Sound isn't exactly very high end but does the job pretty well
Onkyo TX SR508 Amp
Jamo S506HCS3 Speaker Package
Jamo SUB250

PS3 120gig slim (Using it as a media center)
HD PVR 2P
SD PVR

My room is about 6m x 4.5m. Projector is mounted about 5.5m away from the wall. I installed everything myself except for the DSTV. Took me a total of about 10-15hours in labour to install everything over a period of about 6-8 weeks with not a single wire in sight:)

I'm aiming for around a 2.8m wide screen :)

I think your room size is right in the sweet spot for this projector, mine is a bit short.

I'm also doing everything myself - except for DSTV... My surround cables will be the only ones visible, going up the wall in the corner... I hope to get most of it down this weekend.

Use trunking for the wires... Looks neat and you can paint it to match your wall. At the moment the only wires visible are the ones behind my equipment, but once i get my unit built no wiring will be seen.
My screen is about 3.5m wide. After painting my wall it actually looks kinda small, maybe its because I've gotten used to it already....

I plan on grinding a groove for the rear speaker cables eventually... My front/center wires will be placed under the wooden floors, so easily hidden....

My receiver/ps3/pvr/etc will be to the right of the seating position, against the wall I just built conduit piping - so easy to hide.

Really looking forward to having everything setup.

FFS - busy moving in and discovered my front speaker cables are too short :( They cost me over R1,400 for 3m (x2) - now I need new ones.

Same thing happened to me. I initially had all my equipment at the back of the room by the seating area with a 10m HDMI cable. Now that its all in the front i need a 15m cable as its about 5m short of where i want my equipment once my unit is built. I bought a 100m roll of 2.5mm speaker cable and ended up using about 60m for all my speakers. Why dont you just setup your equipment in the front then you dont have to replace those cables? you'll just need a longer HDMI cable from your projector to your amp which should cost alot less if you're not fussy about expensive HDMI cables. I'm using an ellies one and never had any problems so far.

A few things I realised when you get a projector is that you need to plan every single aspect of your setup before you even get the projector to avoid unecessary costs and always anticipate spending double or even tripple your initial budget:)

Problem with that is I just built a wall with the conduit exactly where I need to put all the av equipment.... so my cables will be hidden.

Never uploaded pics here before... Whats the easiest way to go about it?

Upload here :: http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/ then use the pic url - then local only guys can also see it.

Or use something like Photobucket.

I actually wanted to take pictures this morning, but forgot :(

My bipoles are up, floor standers and center in but not positioned, couches are in place... just need screen and projector :)

Here are some pics taken with my cellphone, so they dont look that good. Got better ones that i took with my other camera, Will post those when I get home from work. These were taken before I painted my wall. The wall was like a dark pink/red colour.
