Projector???

Just wanted to put this here since I don't think most people know about this thing.
This thing is literally the Holy Grail of 1080P projection as far as I can see. There's not a lot of content about this projector out there but I've managed to find some Youtube videos doing reviews, and let's just say this thing is more amazing than expected.

This is a 5000 Lumen (2000 lumens brighter than the some of the brightest Home or Office projectors.
It has an Android OS that supports the usual Android "smart" stuff... there's issues with it being in Chinese but you can download an .apk file that fixes some of it, in truth, I don't really care, just want to plug it into the source and forget about the built in smart features.
3000:1 contrast ration and doesn't have the color accuracy problems you get with really bright projectors (which is why higher end Home Cinema projectors tends to be much less bright)
It's driven by freakin' lasers so the "lamp" life of this thing is rated for 25,000 hours, that's 20-30 years if you watch content for 2 to 4 hours each day.
Proper Bluetooth remote with the new "simplistic" design that's so much better than old school remotes.
Ultra short throw, so you get a massive 150" image when placing the projector just 50cm from the wall (and it auto focuses and adjusts the image, no more fiddling around to get that right)
It even has a really good sounding Dolby Soundbar speaker with proper bass etc. built in.
And in case it's not obvious, this thing is completely silent and you don't need it to warm up... I'm assuming it also means there's less stress on the components so it should last quite a while. There's also a tear down video of this thing on Youtube and the internal components look incredibly well designed.

I have on day left to decide if I'm going to drop R27K on this thing...
Please help! :wtf:

P.S. my Viewsonic projector has started giving up the ghost after dropping R4K on a new lamp, again.. eish.

$2000.

Any opinion on that price?
Mine is that it's quite a bit of money, however, looking at the prices of projectors over the past few years to get something similar to what I have now would cost me the same as 5 years ago.
Also, I've spent about R17K on my initial R10K projector due to bulbs etc. and it just isn't reliable... (where hopefully this thing is).
Also, specs wise there's nothing I can think of on the market for mid to high end Home Cinema Projects that come close to this in price... really good ones tend to start at about R30K to R40K and doesn't have the brightness this thing has (someone can correct me on that)

The only alternative is to buy something like a 65"-70" entry leve LED TV for that price.. which, granted, will give you better image quality but it's hard to explain to someone what the difference is between a 65 or 70 inch screen in front of you versus a 120+ inches of pure awesome that fills your living room at night.

Yikes! That's a lot of dough to spend on a projector!

Yeah, agreed. It is flippin' expensive but I guess you get what you are paying for.

PM send with a discount code to save you $120.00. :)

Yeah I replied. Thanks again man :)
It's almost scary how difficult it is to find reasons not to go for it. I guess my only concern is the idea of dropping +-R25K on something that has to go through our postal service, then hope it gets here and works perfectly.
Also not sure about what I'll do if there are any "lamp" module issues etc. in future (potentially). From what I can see it looks like it is possible to change out the laser module (or even upgrade it in future) but I'm not completely sure.

The only shipping option is Priority Line (Aramex) so it will be delivered to your door. Also, they normally very securely in the box and won't normally give issues. Also note that Aramex use very big bags and don't move items one at a time so not so easily to get damaged.

That is great to know. Thanks again...
So basically all I have left to do is pull the trigger.

So, just an update and correction on this post.

Luckily I do research before dropping that amount of cash on something and there's something in the specs reported on this projector everywhere that is quite deceiving.
Basically, if you go back to the original Chinese press release the stated brightness of 5000 lumens was stated as being "light source" lumens.

In summary, the white light in a DLP projector (whether it be from a laser or mercury vapor lamp source) is split into RGB (or RGBY, whatever) and then passes through LCD filters which run at say 3X or 4X the speed of the mirrors on the DLP Chip to get a 60Hz 1080 image...essentially though the light source brightness is reduced by about 3X because of the way each RGB pixel on the target surface is formed (plus some extra losses thorugh filtering etc. losses that are more in conventional projectors than in laser projectors because of the color spectrum of the light source that needs to be filtered down to the narrow spectrum bands you need for RGB light).

So in actual fact the brightness of this projector is more like (5000 / 3 = 1666)...plus losses it's closer to 1300-1550 lumens.
Using the same logic for my existing 3000 Lumen Viewsonic (which has been measured to sometimes be about 3200 lumens at the target) my projector would actually be around 9000 lumens.

It's still a great projector, but for someone like me who values brightness because of the way my living room is set up and used this could be a huge issue if you don't expect it.

That is some great information about how the projector works and how the manufacturers define certain information. A lot of people do not realize that a 1080p advertised projector can have a native resolution lower then 1080p and that it does not work like TV's.

After watching a few videos of the Xiaomi, I realize that it is not like a normal projector as this needs to be mounted below the screen and around 50cm away making it a short throw projector. Also, it is lazer based which is suppose to be a lot better but also crazy expensive.

I think it is more feasible to go with a normal style projector being 1080p native resolution and maybe LED based as they can be brighter.

Yeah thanks.
I ended up ordering an Optoma DH1009i "Business" projector locally for less than R10K.... from the specs (and chassis etc.) the DH1009i looks pretty much exactly the same as the famous Optoma HD27 Home Cinema projector (apart from the contrast ratio stated as 22,000:1 and 25,000:1 and the fact that one is black and the other is white).

I'm hoping the DH1009i is in fact the same projector without the "Home Cinema" price tag, if that's the case it'll be a great little "life hack" buy I'm sure.
