I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I've had a Proline 2000VA Line Interactive UPS for the past 4 years, and for the most part, it has done its job. It basically powers a small server and an ADSL modem and separate router for about 1-2 hours, which is great (and a lot longer if I turn off the server). Recently, however, I've found it only lasts about 1 minute before turning off when the power goes, which is happening more frequently in my area. From what I understand, this suggests that the battery needs replacing, however, I'm not sure how to go about it. I don't really want to open it up, and would rather get someone else to do it (mortal fear from all these stories of UPS' blowing up), but not sure whether I'd need to contact Proline (tried via their apparent "email support", but have been waiting 3 weeks now), or maybe I can do it through a local store which supplies batteries. I live in Pietermaritzburg, so I'm a bit isolated.

It would be nice to replace the item with something new, but the APC brands are far too expensive with this kind of capacity, and the alternative is just buying the same model again, which is R2k on Takealot.

Can anyone provide some guidance on what route to take. Are there any alternatives I should consider?

Thanks!

It's generally a reasonably straight forward process, although I have had no experience with the Proline models.

Do you have the original manual for it? It is normally detailed in there how to go about it, and should not be too complicated.

It seems a bit OTT to replace the whole unit if it's only the batteries that are on their way out.

They are normally the 12V 7Ah or 9Ah alarm panel type batteries that are used, which are freely available from a number of sources.

Thanks for the reply, kayvee. I managed to dig up the manual, and it does seem pretty straight forward. Apparently it takes "12V/9AH x 2pc", but I presume once I get the battery out, it'll have the information stamped on it, and I can phone around for a replacement.

I've dealt with Mantech in the past and their delivery charges are reasonable. Just ensure that you order the correct lug (connector) size, if in doubt phone them they're very helpful.

No problem. You can also try Electrocomp in Pinetown. R 163.36 ea. excl. VAT

Nope, just a customer here.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Unfortunately Electrocomp don't have stock of the battery I need, and won't for a while, and Mantech's KZN branch apparently don't understand the concept of email. I tried asking their JHB branch if they can deliver, but they just referred me to the KZN branch. :P

Can anyone else recommend a place? I can maybe pick up from the Durban area, otherwise it needs to be place which can courier the batteries to me.

Yeah the F2 is 6.35mm and the (standard) F1 is 5.08mm.

Did you try the BatteryMan downtown? Gonna pay through the proverbial... for it though.

Will give them a try, thanks. Funnily enough also just got a reply from Mantech JHB, and apparently their Durban branch had no power yesterday... or something. So will see how their prices compare.

I've dealt with Gordon Klink from the CTown branch in the past - gordon.klink at mantech dot co dot za
