Looking to buy a budget tablet mostly for video, reading, and organizing purposes at campus. I found a Proline Smart AK888-28 10.1" which I can get at a discounted rate of R1580 through the student programme: http://proline.studenttech.co.za/initiative/#!page/prodlist/prodid/15432/cat/798

Is this a good deal or are there better options?

For anyone that has used this device:
1. How is the touch responsiveness?
2. Is there Play Store access and compatibility with common apps?
3. Can it be rooted?

Any input will be appreciated.

Its a great device, using one personally.

EDIT: Ah crap, you're looking at the 7" one, i have the 10" variant. (R2200), this info might NOT BE WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. Sorry, should check the links before hand :( ignore the info if this is irrelevant!

Pro:
1. It already comes with a cover to protect it.
2. The price is an illusion, its made out of aluminum. (wtf?!)
3. It uses a mediatek quad core, with a MP400 Mali GPU.
4. Plays any game great.
5. Only Proline branding is found when loading, the rest is stock Android.
6. Very smooth UI. (No lag, seriously 0_0)
7. The display is great for its price.

Cons
1. Heavy tablet, its the heaviest tablet I have ever carried. This is also because of the heavy duty cover.
2. First time loading takes 2minutes at most, after that, at least 1minute
3. The display is average, but brightness is excellent (you do get what you pay for, I would place the resolution and brightness on par with a galaxy tab (the very first 10.1 edition) but it doesn't have OLED).

I know the cons can be bad, but when you consider the pricing, this tablet is the best thing on the market right now, I was TRULY AMAZED at what you get the for the price.

You will NOT be disappointed.

I will post some pics of the tablet later for you after work. (I have it at home)

EDIT 2: Sorry definitely the wrong model, they use the same picture, or its very similar. Link:http://www.proline.co.za/our-products/tablet/L10A1G/overview/#product

@ Nether, almost the same. Only difference is 3G, 1000mAH battery difference, 8GB internal space difference. So I guess you can benchmark it somehow.

@ Dade; Oh cool. That's a decent price. Bummer stock is avail on 31 Jan...

@ http://www.proline.co.za/where-to-buy/ there's local stores (East London). So, this means all stores have no stock?

Another thing, only students are entitled to that price? If so which?

Yes it's only for students at participating universities.

Still helps a lot, thanks.

Have you tried rooting? Do you have Play Store access and compatibility with apps?

Edit: Found several RK3066 rooting guides on xda so I supposed rooting is possible.

Yes all those tablets have proper Playstore access. (Games from tegra is an exception)

I haven't rooted mine no, don't see the need to do it.

Deciding between the tablet in the title and an Onyx Athena. Main differences are:

Proline AK888-28
Storage: 8GB
Resolution: 1024 x 600
Weight: 700g
Battery: 6000mAh

Onyx Athena
Storage: 16GB
Resolution: 1024 x 768
Weight: 589g
Battery: 5000mAh

Prices are the same. Which sounds like a better option?

Proline... A supplier did tell us not to touch the Onyx ones as the comeback rate is very high

For what reason? I'm leaning towards the Onyx because of the weight and increase in resolution.

Apparently they have a huge amount of problems with them and many were returned for repairs... Don't know about the Proline... But when a supplier tells you to stay away when u want about 20 units, there definitely is something wrong:rolleyes:

Placed an order for mine and payed via EFT on Thursday and they still haven't processed my payment... Do they usually take that long? I'm worried
