Has anyone used it?

I have been losing a considerable amount of hair recently and I've come to the depressing conclusion that I have inherited the male pattern baldness gene. Spent quite a bit of time over the last couple of weeks reading about various forms of treatment available ( I like my hair too much to consider shaving it all off atm. :))

Hair transplant seems to work quite well, as they take hair from the back of your head ( these hairs arent affected by the hair loss gene) and implant them on the areas that you have lost hair. But, you carry on losing hair that exist prior to the transplant. So, the doctors prescribe Finasteride (Propecia) which is the most effective drug out there that prevents further baldness. The drug blocks the hormone that causes hair loss. BUT, I suppose there is no miracle cure without any side effects. A small percentage of men who take the drug report various sexual side effects. From erectile dysfunction to low libido!

A lot the proponents of the drug claim its temporary but recently there have been guys who have suffered permanent side effects even after stopping the drug! Dont think its worth the risk, rather go bald then not have sex lol. But, many doctors still prescribe it and many have been taking it for years without any issues.

So, has anyone used it? Thoughts?

Be a man, go bald :p.

Also, never knew drugs started to blog hormones. Do they like start ranting on tumblr or twitter about the hormones, going "Yo dawg, ya gotta stop yo bald crap dawg. Shizz is gonna get real here mother ****er. #hormones, #badassdrugs, #yoface" :D.

...

The drug blogs the hormone that causes hair loss.

The only way to deal with baldness is to own it. Crop your head short, polish your forehead and go boldly forth.

been on propecia for about 7 years, not a single side effect
dont believe the **** you read out there, most of it is posted by people who have something to gain - ie competitive products etc

Thanks Nivek. You are probably part of the majority. They do say it only affects about 1-5% of people that use it, and a smaller percentage of that have permanent side effects, so the numbers are pretty small. Its a risk I dont know I could take. How old were you when you started? Has it helped (stopped hair loss or made hair grow back) ?

Been using Proscar. Cut into quarters. Works out a lot cheaper.
I also use minoxidil. I started with 9% solution for about a year then dropped to 5%.

No side effects and I keep my hair.

Don't be so quick to say that. I was on it for about two years and I noticed the lower libido and eventually I started having other problems.

Thank God when I went off it my functions returned to normal. Happily married now with no lasting effects but I will think very hard about ever going on something like that again...

Used this for about a year before I got married (22 at the time), never had any side effects - 3 kids later I would consider going back.

It's quite expensive though for a monthly course.
