Hi everyone, I am looking to purchase a used Audi A3 1.8 TFSI 2014, I found one that I liked but it has the APR Stage 2 upgrade installed.

The upgrade consists of a custom APR ECU remap, custom APR intake, downpipe and exhaust system.

I just want to find out from the true petrol heads, or someone who has had personal experience on how this could effect the car in the long run, can it lead to engine failure as a result of the excessive power increase, wear and tear, warranty etc.

Basically everything I should take into consideration when purchasing the vehicle with this mod.

The car itself is in good condition and has low milage with full service history.

Your help would be apriciated.
Thanks

Hey,

I'm no guru but previously worked in the industry so this is what I can contribute:

If the car has been modified, it's probably been driven very hard (low mileage yet lots of hard low mileage driving)- I think these motors are quite strong but you never know. Also, I would check with Audi if the warranty/m plan has not been voided by this mod. If this is the case- walk away.

Secondly, I personally think that the mods will not do you any favours in terms of resale value when you sell it.

Good luck.

Not a case of if. It won't have a warranty.
Not true at all.

VW Hatfield bryanston services a lot of cars with even more serious mods. I've done both engine mods and suspension mods on my MKV Gti , and they were cool about it.

They might be ok with servicing it. Until you have a really expensive warranty claim, and VWSA refuses to pay for it. Try it, and let us know how it turns out. :)

Ironically the head of the workshop division ( Morne ) tunes/mods cars himself, but yeah I get what you saying.

I'd steer clear because it's probably had a hard life as well as a lack of a maintenance plan

IMO if the warranty and motorplan are still intact, then you have nothing to worry about.

APR is a really top end tuning company, and the local APR/Revo boys are no jokers.

All is well.

I'd assume though that if someone mods their car they are the type that will actually push the car and at least get some sort of use from all the money they spent on mods.

I've heard one guy say that he'll drive his Polo GTI like he stole it and keep it for two years before selling it and making it someone else's problem in the future... That seems to be common these days!

You're going to be permanently at risk of losing your plan - they might be cool with a service but if your turbo blows, Audi have every right to refuse to pay.

If the plan gets cancelled you'll also lose a fat chunk on the resale value and have to live with the risk that is an overstressed engine.

You're probably also looking at it because it's going for a good price, and that's another warning sign.

I'm not against modifying but would prefer to do it on my own terms.

The only modified car I'd buy is if I personally knew the owner or I followed some sort of build thread on a forum, saw how the car was handled and treated and who did the work on the car
