Prospects of uncapped

I am left in the dark. I was putting all my faith in the ICASA hearings to improve the miserable ADSL situation. The ICASA hearings have come and gone. The next moment we see a meagre reduction in the line rental of ADSL and an increase in ADSL installation fees. Was this the result of the ICASA hearings? Did ICASA accept this? Is this the end of the story? What about the draft ADSL regulations? Are there any prospects of uncapped or at least cheaper ADSL? Anyone please!

I can give only an opinion, and I'd say no and no, at least for quite a long time. Telkom is running riot. ICASA is run by an alleged sleepy-head, and senior staff are leaving - see this thread:

The SNOT has said it does not want to start a price war when and if it ever gets selling any product. It will be staffed by ex-Telkom guys to quite an extent - guys who have "taken packages" or who leave Telkom for better $$$. Its first target markets are not likely to be committed leechers who want uncapped broadband ( like me! ).

The govt burbles on doing little. Ivy has a few more donuts.

The whole telecoms scene is a complete and utter stuffup and I see no relief in sight.

Thanks for your very useful comments, albeit very dishearting! You say you are a leecher. I am a high end user too. How do you go about with your downloads? I purchase openweb accounts every now and then but it turns out expensive if u do it too often. Even the 30 gig accounts are out of my reach. Or are you on of the lucky ones with uncapped?

Well I didn't want to dishearten you - maybe some of the members closer to the action have something positive to add?

I pay R1539 for an uncapped IS connection ( plus the line of course ) every month and download mostly off Easynews, doing about 60-70Gb a month. Which is about as much as I can handle

Thanks for your quick reply PIP. With such high price you pay for uncapped, I presume you download 24/7 otherwise it would be a total waste. I normally download from newzbin and my needs are high because of all the available downloads. In the good old days, I downloaded about 120 gig a month. May I ask what ISP you use, I am considering your uncapped option. At what speeds do you download?

Not quite 24/7, probably closer to 16 hours weekdays and most of the weekends. I have an IS connection, resold by a local ISP ( no names no pack drill ) who partly supports it, but the Cisco router is straight from IS. Several ISPs resell this or you can buy from IS.

I have a 384k line, but the IS price is for a 512. Not an issue!

Edit - there is a R1500 setup.

As I said my line is a 384. IS don't sell a 384 uncapped, but it is OK on their 512 service because my line is slower.

Postman, there was a dude going around posting about this new internet service thing and how it's going to revolutionise internet here in SA, and he didn't understand why we weren't using it here.

Those prices I posted where from the site he was advertising.

He was also spamming that post all over the forum so the mods decided to ban him and deleted all his posts, unfortunately this has led to some confusion now because they chose not to indicate the banned post at all, so there's some incongruency.
