Lost 2 routers and 2 PCI network cards in one week.

What is the most cost-effective way to protect routers against lightning?

unplug your phone line from you router during thunderstorms. the easiest way. Or go Wireless and pay a fortune for data

Unplugging is all that works, I have the same problem here in Centurion, I found a great little device at makro that unplug your line for you... Must say been handy leaving torrents running while I'm at work  :D:D

Unplugging is all that works,

Not true.

Proper lightning protection:

Line > 350V 20KA 3 terminal gas arrester > 2 series 22 ohm wirewound 5W resistors > dual tranzorb + a decent dedicated earth connection.

Some basic soldering skills and an el cheapo little box to house it in, done.

Made up a bunch last year at sum total of under 20 bucks each, the local ones nogal.
