Protein vs. carbs

Maybe, but imho I'd rather go see someone and have a proper plan worked out vs thinking that we are all magically 100% the same using one shoe-fits all.

:edit
If you get heart disease then we'd know someone was right ;)

lol
Problem is, how do you know that the someone you go see has it right? People only know what they've been taught :/

btw when I'm low carbing properly (I do have lapses - I am a carb addict sadly), my cholesterol figures are generally around:
LDL 0.8
HDL 2.0
Triglycerides 1.0
(if I remember right)

Pretty OK, I reckon.

How sustainable is the Atkins Diet?
As a quick weight loss solution it might work but for how long can a person stay away from basic fruits, vegetables and carbs?
A long term eating plan is what we should pursue.

It's actually a long term eating plan.
If you do it by the book there are 3 phases:
Induction - 2 weeks, 20 grams of carbs per day max, restricted to what you can eat
Ongoing weight loss - until you get near your target weight. During this phase you start increasing the carb count until you find the level at which your weight loss stops. You then maintain below this level until you're happy with your weight. You also introduce other foods, such as nuts and berries as well as slightly higher GI carbs, provided they don't stall you or cause an excessive insulin reaction
Then, Maintenance - you eat at your carb level for the rest of your life - maintaining your weight easily. Some people can get away with fruits, rice, pasta... some can't. It's up to you to find what works for you. Personally, I can't. As I mentioned, I am a carb addict, so quitting the high GI carbs is like quitting smoking. Having a drag would just fire up the cravings again...

Vegetarian activists must hate Atkins :p

Nope. I was on his diet over 20 years ago and lost weight.

For me the issue isn't "diet", but finding the foods that are right for you (your body). If you must eat meat then so be it, just try to get free range (at least).

You need to find a way of healthy eating that you can follow for the rest of your life. No crash diets.

I'm curious. What do you eat in place of bread/rice in most meals?

How do you really remove carbs from everyday diet?

I used to make sandwiches for my lunch box. Now I fill my lunch box with all the stuff minus the bread. Simple really :)

Instead of having pasta once a week, I cook it only occasionally.

We used to order pizza every weekend, now it's more like once a month.

When I go out to eat, I will order a bigger steak with some veggies and tell them not to put any fries on the plate.

If I feel like a burger, I have one minus the bun - surprising how many waiters don't even blink at that request.

It's all about finding the right balance for you :)
