Stellenbosch - Police and private security outnumbered students who tried to shut down operations at Stellenbosch University on Wednesday.

Protesters travelled from the University of Cape Town, University of the Western Cape, and Cape Peninsula University of Technology by train in an attempt to bring Maties to a standstill.

About 100 made it onto campus. Police on Merriman Avenue stopped students walking from the train station. Smaller groups made their way to the institution, where a peaceful gathering took place at the Rooiplein.

Afterward, protesters tried to disrupt an exam being written at the education faculty. Public Order Police and private security patrolling the roads surrounding the campus met them.

"Nobody is going to write exams until we have free education!" student leaders told police in a tense stand-off.

Protesters spent hours outside the building, applauding when the police eventually dispersed. Seven security guards kept watch outside the building.

Exams continued under strict security checks.

USB has so far been the most resolute university in the Western Cape, gaining ever increasing amounts of respect from me.

Go on USB shut this shyte down again like you did before!

Rode past it yesterday, they were at the entrance of the Education department and a part of Ryneveld street was closed off with heavy police presence. I just casually rode though it anyway, not much going on.

yeah what ever, terrorists.

if only they used this dedication and resources to get to uni and study and feed themselves, maybe they wouldnt be "protesting" in the first place.

..lol, they drop out because of "circumstances" BFS
