Durban - A group of protesters petrol bombed a clothing factory in Isithebe on Wednesday evening, the latest in a string of attacks.

Pushed from the streets of the industrial complex into surrounding informal settlements, platoons of rioters roamed the streets, chanting and jeering at police.

Police and security personnel were the first to arrive at the Distinctive Choice clothing factory as a plume of black smoke rose from the warehouse.

A petrol bomb had been hurled onto the back of the factory and flames began tearing through the interior.

Firefighters, protected by heavily armed guards, have started fighting the fire.

Four factories were also petrol-bombed in Isithebe on Monday night.

On Tuesday morning, protesters marched to the local police station to demand the release of 120 people arrested on charges of public violence, malicious damage to property and arson, after several factories and vehicles were torched.

The protest purportedly stems from the re-nomination of the ex-mayor to stand as a councilor in the upcoming local government elections.

Live ammunition.... enough is enough.

This is no longer a protest, this is terrorism/economic sabotage. If firefights have to have heavily armed guards to protect them while they do their job then said heavily armed guards should just put the people threatening them down.

That's what happens when a terrorist organisation is put in government - they have to go easy on terrorists or lose their support base, when they really should be using live ammunition.

Are you guys really that bloody stupid to think that the best way to resolve issues is to kill people?

You want more Marikana massacres?

Your level of thinking is no better than those that are rioting

It is not a massacre if you kill people in self defence yourself which is what the cops in Marikana were doing.

Also, it is just anecdotal but order has been restored there and those miners will think twice about trying to kill butcher again.

Sometimes you need to draw a line in the sand and hold it at all costs.

Water canon first, then cs gas .... It burns more when people are damp ..... The pain lasts longer .... gives these democrats time to think while they suffer the gains of their stupidity.

They should be locked up for 20 years for sabotage. Same with copper thiefs. And there we can see why Verwoerd kept them on the other side of the fence.

Just chop off both their hands and deport them to a desert. I do not want to pay for these scums to sit in prison doing nothing all day long.

I know back in the day, from old SAP...they had protesting in the area. And this lot were causing K*K BIG TIME. SAP shot and killed one. The last of that shyte. Never any trouble again. But to be more humane, take them and whip them. That will be the last of their shlt.

Two months later:

"These business owners are racist/imperialist/sexist/evil/greedy for moving their businesses elsewhere."

.....and we demand jobs and houses or we burn down the clinic and schools.

We need some serious action on violent protests. Stun nades and rubber don't work anymore. It is not your constitutional right. For decades now people have been allowed to riot and destroy knowing there is never any real consequences to their actions. Need to put a stop to it. Need to start treating criminals and terrorists as criminals and terrorists and not as law abiding citizens protected by rights and constitution.
