Protesters stormed a United Nations base in the eastern Congolese city of Goma on Monday demanding the departure of peacekeepers from the region.

Hundreds of people blocked roads and chanted anti-UN slogans before storming the headquarters of the UN peacekeeping mission in Goma, as well as a logistical base on the outskirts of the city.

The protesters smashed windows and looted computers, furniture and other valuables from the headquarters,

The UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, MONUSCO, has come under regular local criticism for its perceived inability to stop fighting in the conflict-torn east.

Over 120 armed groups roam the volatile region, where conflict has displaced millions of people and civilian massacres are common.

The latest protest comes after the president of the Congolese senate, Modeste Bahati, told supporters in Goma on July 15 that MONUSCO should "pack its bags".

Ahead of Monday's protest, the Goma youth branch of the ruling UDPS party released a statement demanding MONUSCO "withdraw from Congolese soil without conditions because it has already proved its incapacity to provide us with protection".

Khassim Diagne, the deputy special representative of the UN secretary general to MONUSCO,said the UN is not opposed to protests but that violence is unacceptable.

The UN should leave, the people have spoken.

100% agreed.

They don't want them there, the UN should leave and when the locals cry about the fighting and wail to have a peacekeeping force again they should get told to fsck off.

Five protesters killed in anti-UN protests in DR Congo’s Goma

At least five people have been killed and fifty others wounded on the second day of anti-United Nations protests in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo city of Goma, according to the government.

“We will come back during the day with [a special briefing] on to be drawn. We will also take stock of the process of withdrawing the @MONUSCO that has already begun,” government spokesman Patrick Muyaya tweeted on Tuesday, giving the death toll.

There might just be another side to the storey in that "UN peacekeepers" can be subcontracted from poorer states (Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Rwanda) who make a bit of money (for their leaders most likely) out of this. The "peacekeepers" are not that well equipped, trained or disciplined (even the South Africans) and this can lead to friction with locals. All funded, mostly, by the hated US ironically.

But essentially I agree, if they are not wanted, go home.

The more large greedy corporate companies and corrupt governments bleed people dry of their possessions and money, the more this will happen, over the whole world.

Wonder where most of their "aid" comes from , the West or the East.

The South....
In 2020, the DRC HF received US$57.1 million, with top five donors being Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium,
Sweden, and Canada. These contributions and the carry-over of $42 million from 2019 allowed the Fund to allocate $75 million to 111 projects, with 75 still under implementation in 2021.
