Protesters set the house of Koster Mayor Kim Medupe alight on Wednesday afternoon, North West police have said.

"In the morning, there was a service delivery protest where they blocked the roads with burning tyres and objects," police spokesperson Sergeant Ofentse Mokgadi said.

Mokgadi said they had torched five cars at the mayor's home, and one at a guesthouse that was apparently owned by the mayor.

Koster protests: another house torched, 14 arrested

Koster - A councillor's house was torched and 14 people arrested during protests in Koster outside Rustenburg on Thursday, North West police said.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Ofentse Mokgadi said the 14 people were charged with public violence. They are expected to appear in the Koster Magistrate's Court on Monday.

"The situation is tense. The road between Rustenburg and Koster has been closed, as well as the Koster-Swartruggens road," he said. The Derby-Koster road and the Koster-Lichtenburg road were not affected.

On Wednesday, Kgetlengrivier mayor Kim Medupe's house, her guesthouse and another building belonging to her were set alight by protesters, who also made off with appliances. At least six cars were also torched.

Irrelevant, the community around the school will pillage what they can. This is from personal experience in rural kzn. Everybody knows where the schit went to but it's not a major issue as the gov will fix it. It's a sickening mind boggling thing to witness but it's accepted unfortunately. It's a whole different mentality.
 
31 suspects due in court for North West protest violence

The suspects were arrested May 24 and 25 in Koster and Derby after violent community protests that began in Koster on May 23 and spread to neighbouring Derby.

Thirty-one people arrested in connection with violent protests in Koster and Derby in the North West are due to appear in the Koster Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

North West police spokesperson Sergeant Ofentse Mokgadi said they faced charges of public violence, arson, and malicious damage to property. They were arrested May 24 and 25 in Koster and Derby after violent community protests that began in Koster on May 23 and spread to neighbouring Derby.

Koster protesters granted R1k bail

The court ordered they hand over copies of their identity documents, and that they should not participate in any protest until their case is finalised.

Thirty-one people arrested in connection with violent protests in Koster and Derby last week were released on bail of R1 000 each on Monday.

The group appeared briefly in the Koster Magistrates’ Court and the state did not oppose their bail application.

The court ordered that they hand over copies of their identity documents and they should not participate in any protest until their case is finalised.

The case was postponed to June 28 for the decision of the director of public prosecution.

Koster protests suspended pending NDZ’s team intervention

Earlier, pupils from the Mphe-Bana High School staged a silent protest outside the Koster Magistrate’s Court calling for the protest to stop.

Protests in the Kgetlengrivier municipality have been suspended today, pending the intervention of the inter-ministerial task team deployed to stabilised the North West province.

President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed a ministerial task team on April 25, to urgently assess the state of governance in the North-West province.

The team is headed by minister in the presidency for planning, monitoring and evaluation, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Residents in Koster resolved at a meeting in Reagile this afternoon to suspend the protest and requested to meet with a representatives of the inter-ministerial task team by Wednesday.
