A protester was shot dead and another wounded during demonstrations in Sebokeng, south of Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

"The protesters split into two groups, the other group wanted to remove the barricades on the road and the other group would not allow it, several shots were fired between the two groups," said police spokesman Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng.

"One person was injured and was taken to hospital and the other died upon arrival at hospital...

"The situation is bad, arrests are expected," he said.

On Wednesday morning residents of Sebokeng blocked roads with burning tyres, stones and trees.

Roads from Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging were closed due to the protest.

Emfuleni mayor Greta Hlongwane said in a statement that protests in Sebokeng was not about service delivery.

"The municipality wants to put it on record that the protest has nothing to do with provision of basic services," Hlongwane said.

She said the protests were related to a housing development in the area, which was the Gauteng housing department's responsibility.

"It is unfortunate that this matter has now affected the entire community of Sebokeng. We have been engaging with the Boitekong community through a series of meetings where we explained that the provincial housing department is in talks with the owners of the private land where the housing developments is supposed to take place," Hlongwane said.

:wtf: the boss's shoot to kill is being taken seriously. how many protesters have been shot dead already? crazy.

I call this the EFF-effect.

Malema has convinced people that violent protest is their only recourse, and he's working behind the scenes to rile people up as much as possible. His entire political position is founded upon the existence of unrest...

ANC blamed for Sebokeng death

The ANC is to blame for the death of a man killed during service delivery protests in Sebokeng, south of Johannesburg, his brother said on Thursday.

"No ANC politicians are welcome here, they killed my brother like a dog," said Paseka Rabolila.

His 27-year-old brother Lerata was shot dead during a service delivery protest on Wednesday, allegedly by a group of ANC supporters.

Rabolila said: "A group of people wearing ANC T-shirts came out of nowhere and started attacking us and one of them fired several shots at us."

People wearing ANC T-shirts parked their minibuses at a nearby filling station and started moving towards the protesting residents of Boiketlong, he said.

"We put the ANC in power, and now it kills us like dogs... I will never vote for the ANC for as long as I live."

Residents gathered under a railway bridge on Thursday, where they burnt tyres and barricaded roads.

Police were keeping watch.

This I can understand, but, I hope it does not go in favour of the EFF-effect.

The EFF could be responsible in heating things up. A couple of them dressed up as cANCer supporters...

Now Malema can add murder onto his résumé. Real piece of work that guy is turning out to be.
