Hi there

I´ll be in Cape Town at this year an will stay there for 6 weeks. During that time I´ll have to some computer work (preparation of mcse-certification - if anyone wants to participate in a preparation group you´re welcome to contact me) and therefore a fast internet access would be extremly useful. Maybe somethere in the forum can help me - I also hope that I´m right here with my problem.

In which parts of CT is DSL available?
Are there other opportunities apart wired dsl, for example any wireless possibilities?
Which providers do exist in CT?
How fast an access can be switched and installed by the local telco?
What bandwiths are supported - here in Germany for example it´s possible to get up 6 MBit?

As I´m also looking for an accomodation (flat/room) the ideal solution for me would be someone with broadband access who has a room/flat to let.
Some data on my person: 37y, male, studied computer science, can provide any kind of network/computer support in the area of Microsoft products (client + server systems).

Thanks for any kind of information and sorry that not all information are directly related to dsl ;-)

In which parts of CT is DSL available?
Can't answer that, but I'd imagine most areas would be.

There's Sentech MyWireless - avoid like the plague. Otherwise, nothing else is widely available yet.

Which providers do exist in CT?
Doesn't matter - ADSL is provided solely by Telkom, the country's only telecoms provider. Which ISP you go with is your own choice, but it makes no difference really. Pings will be the same, the 3GB cap will be the same...pretty much everything stays the same.

How fast an access can be switched and installed by the local telco?
Will take about 3-4 weeks, maybe more, maybe less.

There's 512 and 384. Might want to look around on www.telkom.co.za for more info...if you can find anything in the first place.

Actually, better try and do more research around the areas. I'm in Sandton and i can't get ADSL (too far away from the exchange).
Sorry not to be much help, but best you know not to take anything for granted from Telkom.

Telkom: Touch Tomorrow? We're still waiting for the technology of today.

Stay in germany =) or better yet... can i come stay at ur place in germany while ur here.. u can stay at my place. ;) hehe soz just supplying some humour... i know u want some answers.

SA does not have REAL broadband... really. We have a pathetic 512k or 386k product.... that has a 3gig monthly cap, which includes local & international traffic into that cap. After hitting the cap, only local is available.

anyway... goodluck

(most of capetown will have ADSL) avoid any wireless providers.. they are all sharkz.

What would ppl like of a no frills low cost internet service provider ?

If you fill up a station wagon with data tapes and drive to capetown you could transfer 10000 GB in 11 hours, and it would cost you R 500 in petrol, Thats the kind of internet I wanna see !

Dean -
I want to Browse Intl + Local, Get Email (Intl + Local), FTP stuff, and Play online games locally with sub 50ms pings, at under 250 per month. 80% uptime. Basic Basic.

Forget all the cr@ppy package offerings and establish a single baseline cost for the service you're able to provide, plus a nominal margin. The service must be optimal in all respects, with the impact of contention and latency not discernable to end-users, i.e. true broadband with the correct customer approach when it comes to service and connectivity issues. Do this, and you'll probably sweep the market, particularly if your final selling price is near the Telkrap offerings. If not, forget it - you won't grow market share, given consumer expectation and anticipation for what may be on offer 01 Feb next year...
