Proview rejects Apple settlement offer

I never said that they were guilty of a crime, I questioned their ethics, just like the article.

So aren't you the one not getting it ? Seems like it.
In one word: sensationalism -- it's drives their readership and in turn their revenue from advertising.

Anyway, let's stop this, its boring and at the end of the day the courts will decide.
No worries...

Yes, that is true, but as you may be aware most Americans are overly patriotic, and a huge corporation that makes massive profits but hardly pays any tax does not sit well with them.

For myself, I'm all in favour of (legal) tax avoidance :D

Ciao

Read a bit more, you notice there are articles after these sensationalism ones that indicate this has had no impact on Apple's popularity, in contrast their popularity has increased in recent surveys over ones done last year... Hence don't believe everything you read...

Me too btw re tax avoidance :D

Mmmhh clearly you don't read much  :p they sold the name to a shell company started by Apple, now at the brink of bankruptcy they deny they sold it (oh it wasn't fair) and now want to make a fortune.
Their iPad unit btw was a dismal failure.

The Shell company that you talk about was not started by Apple. They were hired by Apple to research and obtain the rights to the name in every country of the world.
Only problem is they didn't do their research too well and claimed that they had obtained the rights in China, when they had not in fact done so.

Now why would Apple be offering to settle with Proview if they bought the rights fair and square???

Let's not quibble about details, clearly the company set up was initiated by Apple and clearly you didn't see the contracts that were signed by the same Proview owners that are currently disputing the contract I.e. scanned docs show clearly China was part of e contract, sorry you're wrong :p

So if Apple clearly and unequivocally owns the rights... why are they offering to settle?
Why don't they just wait for the court case and produce the "signed contract"? ;)
Or maybe they realise that it isn't worth the paper it is written on! :D

The difference here is that they were outplayed by Apple (I.e. payment was already made), and only because the Chinese government's protection of its companies is done in opposition to standard global market business practice; are they able to push this in anyway.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple changes the name of the iPad only for the Chinese market; simple really (logo on the back of the iPad, different printing on the packaging, a few posters and the Chinese website).

Apple's subsequent topup offer of $16 million is no small amount considering they settled much of their disputes with The Beatles for $29 million.

At some point the latter renaming approach is going to become financially feasible, and I'm sure Apple's management must already be bordering on that decision...

So in the end Proview might still only be left with the original $55,000 because clearly Apple will not pay a half billion or more to a parasite.
A decent enough top up offer that has btw been already rejected by Proview as they have their sights on billions not millions; now you still think that doesn't merit me calling them a parasite.

Apple has already proven themselves to be the parasite in numerous patent suits... so the answer is NO... Apple continues to be the bully and the parasite.

Parasite implies they are sucking the nutrients out of something or in this context in it for financial gain;

Generalization is bad. I'd suggest in future you try to support your arguments with facts, rather than your personal innuendos I.e. provide factual examples where Apple has demanded licensing fees as opposed to trying to protect its patents?

You don't have to agree with the patent system, but it is the recognized mechanism to promote disclosure of inventions by affording them protection. So until its changed we have no choice but to accept it as a necessary evil. Clearly if replacing was simple, that process would already be underway.

Anyway this line of debate is out of context of this thread, thread is about Proview and not about sharing illogical disdain for everything Apple.
