Hi

Could someone please give me an answer to my question as I have not had any luck with SARS.I was retrenched last year and have now started working as a sole proprietor.

Do I register for provisional tax on efiling or do I have to go to SARS to register.I have activated provisional tax in tax types but I am not sure if I am registered.

Thank you.

SARS automatically changed me to a Provisional Tax Payer after my last tax return. Why not try giving the call center a buzz, I have heard that they are fairly good?

I think you would need to send them a letter to request to be a provisional tax payer

Yup. Correct. You must register as soon as you are liable to pay provisional tax.

However, if you don't register and SARS sees income which is not remuneration, they will automatically register you for provisional tax.

you can register on the e-filing system. as soon as you tick the appropriate block it will automatically register you as a provisional taxpayer and you will be notified by SARS when you need to submit provisional returns.

Thank you for the advice.

I phoned the call center today and they said that I should write a letter to SARS so they could change it on their system.

i have done this with a few of my clients when they needed to become provisional tax payers. the call center agents are just there to click the appropriate button to check if your assessments are done or not. they do not have the experience that is needed to give sufficient advise. i'm sorry but this has been bought up on numerous occassions in tax practitioners meetings as to the lack of knowledge the agents on the call center have. these people have no prior knowledge of assessing, auditing etc.
so just take it from me tick the box where it says provisional tax. the system will automatically register you as a provisional tax payer.

I cannot understand why they have a call center if they do not understand the process to help people like me.

I have called them 5 times and each time I get a different answer to my query.I was at Sars today to try and sought this out but the queue was too long.

I wish that we can get someone with sufficient knowledge from SARS to respond to all our questions on this forum.

It seems they just employ people and give them some basic training to deal with the public.

Thanks guys for your advice I will wait and see what happens and hope I do not get fined for trying to pay my taxes.

You should maybe get rpm to change your description to Tax Expert so that its more obvious. The noobs can't know who here has tax knowledge & who is just talking BS.

I am sorry if I have offended you,but I was referring to the guys at the call center.

My humblest apologies.

lazer you don't need to submit a letter to SARS. just log into your profile and click the provisional tax block. that is sufficient. you will be notified when provisional tax returns need to be submitted i.e. end of february and end of august. SARS will notify you mid january beginning of february or mid july beginning of august via email.
