Anyone know if such a thing exists -- and where & what it's IP is

Tried all the ones I know -- they do NOT seem to like LOCAL ONLY

ZA-Portal was still live a while back, but seems to have closed down aswell.

People won't give you details like this. Not even to mention giving it to you over a public forum!

It's a SECRET

WHY NOT :erm::D;)

All the other "normal" Proxies are known -- I use the Telkom DSL one WHEN my "blended" is working.

Normal use Proxies are NOT secrets -- contrary to whatever you think or have been told :)

A proxy / caching server is a VERY usefull thing -- it just seems a BIG pity that there is NOT one for "LOCAL-ONLY"

I am NOT trying to use something to "bypass" the CAP -- merely something to make LOCAL surfing BETTER.

capiche :)

DNS // PROXY ?????

In that case, use the SAIX dns servers!

I have always been under the impression that these are beasts of a different nature

One to store Domain Name information and to perform IP FQDN translations
&
The other to store information accessed by users who use it as a portal.

Please can you explain how using SAIX DNS servers will help as far as a LOCAL proxy is concerned ???

As you can see from this post -- my LOCAL DNS servers are doing their job.

Proxy Servers

WELLLLLLL

Before everything dissapears in a puff of electron dust ;):D

Here is a link to explain WHAT a "Proxy-Server" is

PROXY SERVER

For the curious and uninformed -- :erm::D

-----------
This is sort of like the story about the police -- you can read your own interpretation into the story ........ ;)

Victim phones cops -- "Please guys come quickly -- the perps are busy trying to break down the doors"

Half an hour later -- Victim "Please please guys you have to come NOW otherwise it is going to be too late "

Fifteen minutes later Survivor "Are you guys STILL not here ? Well sorry but I have just had to shoot and kill two PERPS"

FIVE minutes later Cop van arriving at the gate with screeching smoking tyres.

Are there actually any other local proxy servers other than (the late) ZAPortal proxy, available to use?

There may be some stolen ones around. But who in their right minds is going to pay for 2 gigs of hosting bandwidth (R50 per gig and upwards) for each gig you manage pull down?

Feasability

Why then do ALL the BIG ISP's have these ????

SAIX Cache & Telkom DSL --sure there are IS ones as well

When I talk about a LOCAL PROXY I do NOT mean something like the "Great Late and Lamented".

I mean a Proxy locked to LOCAL-LIST

LOCAL bandwidth is meant to be CHEAP / FREE

WHY should we have such a thing  -- because ONE portal will over time be able to present all of Local-List via ONE IP address.

Here is another way to think of things --

ALL the major SAIX / TELKOM Proxies cache International -- BUT are situated in SA.

NOW I wonder -- if little Jonny Koekemoer who is a bit of a leecher and gets capped all the time was to access the International Proxy with a LOCAL only account
and
asked for something International that BY CHANCE happened to reside on the LOCAL Proxy.

COULD he be given that for which he seeks ?????

After all there must be GIGS & GIGS TERRAS and PENTAS on those Proxys -- all put there by uncapped users who Do use a Proxy.

IF you really want to look for a "Robin-Hood" THAT is where you will find him.

Those with some Brain-Power can work out the permutations.

"Staff-Reporter" has already shown that in -- SA -- STORAGE is cheaper than BANDWIDTH

MW

Dear MW,

You are spot on. Opening up the cache for local users is nice idea

The only fly in the ointment is that peeps using their overpriced international bandwidth to pull down stuff stored on a local server is a major source of windfall profit for the big ISPs. And its the reason why unshaped is more expensive than shaped. They want you to buy more international bandwidth. They don't want you to actually use that local stuff.
