Of late several issues regarding most of the forumites have cropped up regarding proxy servers.

Simply put, a proxy server acts as a proxy (or go-in between) between your computer and the destination website. Most firewalls utilize a proxy server, to maximize workstation protection.

Most proxies are configured to cache data, thereby minimizing the need for the same data to pass through the proxy server.

However, I am lead to believe that some ISP's use proxy servers to maximize their profit, whilst minimizing traffic towards Telkom's networks (which they have to pay for).

We are paying most dearly for our bandwidth, and this smells (to me) just another way of ripping off the customer by denying to the customer his/hers bandwidth the customer so dearly paid for.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm for the use of proxies, to minimize the chances of duplicate data, but I'm against the use of proxies in order to maximize profits.

I have experienced for myself the folly of using a misconfigured proxy server (too slow network responses, or it cahces corrupted downloads meaning people waste their caps in trying to download an uncorrupted download).

The use of proxy servers, whether transparent or not, should entirely be voluntary, meaning that you can choose to use it or not.

What do you guys think?

AMEN! That's what I think uncle Librarian ;) :D :p

Another AMEN! Brother Libz. That's what I have being arguing with the major ISP's for days end! Lol.
Here is a snippet of a un-cached file on a 512K link. Lol, the rest is quite self explanatory"
