Mods please move this to correct forum, not sure which one I need to post this.

Also, if this question has been asked, please direct me to the post, or a forum where I can post this question.

I need to find a proxy server with usage reports per user (not PC), and authentication, as well as content filters.

I browsed the forums, and found 2 possible options. IPCop and SmoothWall. I downloaded the user manuals, etc of both, and kinda ruled SmoothWall out, as it seems to only be a firewall?

First I need to say that I'm a Linux noob, and only once worked with it when I installed Ubuntu on a spare HDD. Worked with it for 30 minutes, and then kinda lost interest.

Anyway, I picked up that one needs quite a few add-ons to make IPCop the way I want it.

1) Will IPCop do what I want it to do
2a) If so, where can I go to find all the relevant info and add-on downloads
2b) If not, what can I look at (cheap or free)

Have loads of other questions, but would want to read some more in fear of sounding like an ass. Would just like to know where.

Thanks!

if u run a nix* based OS i would recommend squid, i can help u set it up with a content filter, daily usage reports, authentication, etc.

Thanks. Just downloaded Squid 2.5 (Only 1.4mb??), and busy reading documentation (about 1.5million pages).

What Linux can I download. Got Ubuntu, not sure if it's gonna work?

Winproxy --- win32
or --IPcop using the addons server with Traffic control and report , gives you daily emails on usage, and logs :)

Currently running WinProxy on a Win2k server. Think it's version 5. Doesn't do authentication and logs. As a proxy and caching server it does it's job fine.

So IPcop will work for what I need it for? Squid looks complicated, or I'm dumb. Probably option 2. ;)

Dunno if I can be of much help here. I know ISA server does what ure wanting (http://www.microsoft.com/isaserver/default.mspx)... or if you want to download it for free.... http://thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3224804 ... so I heard.... ;)

I use an application called m0n0wall instead of IPCop (http://www.m0n0.ch/wall/ )

Another place to look would prehaps be internet cafe software.... not to sure, but some of it may assist you.

Hi w1z4rd, thanks. ISA server is an option. Schools get MS software for free, will check if they can get ISA as well. Would like to keep them legal though. ;)

Checked out internet cafe software before, seemed like a good idea, but couldn't find one to do EXACTLY what I want, but will look into that idea again.

Will check out m0nowall. Thanks.

I'm currently useing Traffic control and report, but it only gives usage reports per PC, not User
