Just about everyone over a certain age has heard of the drug Prozac and most probably a large chunk of those people have used it once or twice in their lives.

There’s no doubt about it, the modern lifestyle is stressful, and antidepressants have become a life saver for many. Computers, the Internet and the sheer speed of the online world have left many people in a tizz. As a species we are finding that technology has kicked dust in the face of evolution and we are left having to pick up the pieces.

But whilst many tout antidepressants as the drug that helped put them back on track, old trials which have recently come to light may flout this idea.

A new review releasing the data from the trials done on Prozac, Paxil and others before the drugs were approved reveal that a group of these antidepressants have very little effect according to the Time Magazine report.

The class of drugs that were studied is known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and it seems they only work on the severely depressed.

Despite this, many people are merrily popping these pills on a daily basis with the idea that they are keeping the blues at bay.

The really laughable part is that these pills, which were found to be ‘barely more effective than a placebo’, are hellishly expensive.

So all this time you could have replaced your Prozac with a couple of tics tacs and the effect would have been the same. All you needed was an expensive doctor to tell you that they were antidepressants.
