Hello,

I am asking on behalf of a college at work.

Personally I advised her that the PS2 is known to last for a long time. 8years + where modern consoles like the Xbox 360 and their infamous 3 lights of doom does not inspire confidence.

Secondly I told her that the PS2 is alot cheaper initially and if u chip it u wouldn't stand to loose so much than if u chipped (is it possible?) your PS3.

Finally I told here there were a lot more PS2 releases in the past 12 years than there is PS3 releases.

But I didn't take into account that you can now play online with your PS3. I couldn't comment about the price of playing online or the overall quality of the PS3 as console. Here's hoping that you guys could shed some "Honest" light on which console would be the most economical and enjoyable for these youngsters at Christmas.

Cheers!

The Xbox problems have been sorted out. I've had mine for over two years now without a problem.

In terms of PS2 vs. PS3/Xbox 360, I'd recommend going for the newer one as it's more likely to be supported for a few more years. The PS2 is almost at the end of its life, and there may very well be no new games being released for it from next year. It does have a large library, but it's a very dated piece of hardware. It's sort of like playing PS1 games when everyone else was playing PS2 games.

I suppose it will also depend on the types of games that she'll be using it for. Keep in mind that the Xbox/PS3 now have Kinect/Move, which is great for the entire family. You should have her visit a few stores to demo them for herself - I know that the Musica in The Zone for instance has a large Kinect stand where people can demo it.

I'm not sure if buying a console on the basis of chipping it is entirely the most responsible piece of advice (no offence). Remember that an Xbox Arcade is not that far off the PS2 in terms of price, and it can be chipped if you're that way inclined. You just won't be able to play online.

Thanks for clearing up some of the misconceptions I had.

Can you perhaps tailor a little table of the pro's and con's of using the two consoles.

Ie. One has online gaming, other doesn't.

Cheaper, More expensive (Accessories?)

What about the Nintendo Wii, if i were to buy myself a modern console I would actually have preferred the Wii since its more "sociable" and this lady has some decent kids. I wouldn't want them turning into a gaming nerd like myself lol

Hehe no problem, I'll try and tabulate everything when I get home from work a bit later.

Well the Wii was more sociable a few years. Basically the PS Move is an add-on for the PS3 that effectively turns it into a Wii, where it uses a controller to detect motion etc. The MS Kinect is an add-on for the Xbox that doesn't require any controller to detect motion - it senses your body movements.

I gave the Kinect a shot at the Musica I mentioned, and was very impressed with it, it's very accurate. While playing the bowling game, it actually knew where you released the ball from and projects the trajectory based on that.

The upside with the Move/Kinect is that she'd be able to play all the existing games (not using Move/Kinect though, just the usual controller), while also being able to play the hoard of new Move/Kinect games being released for family time. I'd definitely recommend that she heads down to a store with the demos set up and tries them out for herself.

Definitely go for either the PS3 or Xbox, the PS2 is old.

You will get way better graphics off a new generation console, ie: Xbox / Ps3.

Get a PS3. Forget the PS2.

And shame on you for even mentioning "chipping".

Youve just won an expenses paid ticket to my ignore list. For providing an un substantiated opinion regarding my question. I don't want comments like this in here thank you.

If u buy a console u better be ready to buy games for it as well, people actually put hard work into this so that there are good games that you can play. Piracy is stealing some 1 else's hard work, if you cant afford games go buy a tv or something then.

onto your topic, buying the PS2 over any other console will be a complete waist, the amount of games being released for it now is next to nothing, if there is 1 new game in a month it is a lot.

The wii is a good option for most and its not that expensive, but be careful when picking games for it, it has a lot of terrible games out there more than other consoles.

Look into the playstation move and connect if you want more social games think this will give you best of both worlds

If this was 2005 or even 2006 I'd say go for the PS2. It's actually still a nice system to have even if you own current gen as well, but if you only had to choose one get a cheap solution: Xbox 360. The PS2 new is overpriced as hell.

PS2 is worth second hand if you've never experienced the awesome that is Metal Gear Solid 2/3.

I had a PSX and bought about 20 games, PS2 (chipped), had about ten games. Now got a PS3 for 2 reasons: its a blu-ray player which makes it a HD device, and secondly GT5 which has been released. Won't buy much games cos not much time but I got a kid who turns 5 next month so will mostly buy used kids games for him.

You have to ask her what is her budget firstly cos the PS3 is no more a 5 grand machine, it closer to 3 or under.

This is irrelevant for people who haven't played any of the PS2 games since 2000..

You can get PS2 games for 20rand each and spoil ur kids with HUNDREDS of games. Whereas PS3 games are few and far in between.

Problem is just finding the guy with the huge collection of PS2 games to copy from lul

Where is Playstation Waldo? Well he lives in the Southern Suburbs :) (wink wink)

Economical & current in terms of technology & graphics - Xbox 360
Expensive & current in terms of technology & graphics - PS3
End of life & dated graphics - PS2

If she is asking this question then she is probably not into serious gaming so online multiplayer shouldn't really factor into your decision. Get the xbox360 bundled with Kinect. Been playing kinect quite a lot at my parents house the past few weeks and it is a ton of fun. Make sure to get kinect sports, the table tennis is awesome.

Another thing to think about is what TV this is being played on, if its non HD then i would probably stick to PS2

True. But PS3 is improving in cost of ownership. Games are still too pricey but you can often get titles for R200 or less now (like BFBC2).

Dated graphics is all relative. If you have a HD screen then yes, but if you still stuck on the old TV, I cannot tell the difference between the graphics of Black on my PS2 vs BFBC on my PS3.

I would say that unless your buying a chipped PS2 or buy the PS2 for Singstar, its not worth it. I could not even sell my PS2 Slimline Silver on Gumtree with 12 games for R1500 this year - ended up selling the games at Cash Converters and just keeping Need For Speed for the little one to play.

Good point hey. They probably don't have an HD Telly to plug the P3 into so would be a waste playing the PS3 on a 480 x 640 / 800x600 resolution screen =\

I'm so thankful there are stil people who can bring constructive comments to these forums. Too bad I can't read cbrunsdonza's comment below but I bet it doesn't contain much other than usual personal preference and biased hype or myths.
