Now I know this is probably like asking which is better, SGS 3 or iPhone 5 but let me try :)

I am not a gamer at all. I play the odd PC game but know nothing about the latest consoles. So based on this limited knowledge I need to ask, which one of the above do you feel is better and why?

I know for many it will come down to which games you can get on each platform but I am catering for a 13 yr old and a 5 yr old here so the latest games are not going to be a priority. Pretty much anything will entertain them. I have always liked the idea of a Wii because of the "getting active" component. I am lead to believe these two have facilities that allow them to mimic that. Why one does that better and at what cost?

Also which is better at doubling as a media player?

Not a fan of the small drive space on the PS3 although I understand it is SSD. Will this be of much benefit? Also I can add an external drive. Does the XBOX allow this via USB?

Sorry lots of questions and more will come probably. For now, why would you choose one over the other. Both will be at the same price so price is not a factor, although price of games will be. Unless both are easy to chip/jailbreak/root (whatever you call it in the gaming world :)

All I can add is that an Xbox is easier to "root" than a new PS3. Other advantages of xbox is that cross-platform games are better on xbox than on PS3 (no, this is not debateable)

I myself have a PS3.

I had an xbox but I was a poor student and couldn't afford games so I sold it and bought a PS3 for the bluray player and so that I could pirate :(

Ah, nice. I was going to add that it would be nice to get opinions that were not swayed by personal bias but thought it not possible. Seems it may be. Thanks. The PS3 is confusing me a little with the 500GB, 12GB SSD, new slim case, old case.... does any of this actually make a difference other than visually and cost wise (for the 500GB drive).

The one available would be the 12GB SSD though.

There's the PS3 slim (120GB, 160GB, 250GB and 320GB) and the new superslim (12GB and 500GB). Teh only difference is that the fan is quieter but the disc tray is apparently noisier. The only reason they were introduced is because they're cheaper to maunfacture so no major difference really. Depends if you plan to use the space. With either PS3 you can add your own HDD.

The only way is to see the kind of games you kids like to play.

Also what do the friends have ? If all the friends have Xbox then its the way to go (or vice versa)
 
PS3 is the better media player. That's a given.

You only need the hard drive to download psn games. Since it doesn't seem you'll be interested in that the 12gig will be fine. Most xbox games are on PC while the PS3 exclusives are just fantastic and outnumber xbox exclusives by far.

Another, albeit superficial and subjective, advantage of the PS3 is that it looks much better. :D The xbox just looks like, well, a box.

But I do prefer the feel of the xbox controller but since your kids have used neither, that shouldn't be an issue.

If it's for a 5-year old and a 13-year old then I'd recommend the Xbox. The Kinect is far better than the Move.

Well that is also valid.... I hated the Xbox controller and its possibly the biggest reason for not getting it.

What are PSN games?

I also am not sure I am keen on this whole online gaming thing. What are these subscriptions you need to pay that I see talked about? The older kid might be into that but not if it'll cost a fortune.

They will out grow kinect and move very quickly and move on to things like COD/GTA.

More than that, it's ergonomically better. The left thumbstick is where your left thumb would be. On the PS3 controller you have to reach for it.

Thanks. That is something I touched on and could be very important for the younger one especially. Do either come close to what the Wii offers in this respect?

PlayStation Network. It's free.

Xbox live has subscription but I hear it's better than PSN.

The Kinect is actually better than the Wii since it doesn't rely on any sort of controller, your body is the controller. Just make sure that you have more than 2m between the couch and the TV, otherwise it won't work. And make sure that the game is Kinect-compatible, otherwise you'll need to use a controller.

Sorry, so let me get this straight. Those allow you to play online games or they allow you to purchase a game and then play online against your friends with the same game?
