How do I go about setting up my PS3 to play through a 5.1 Surround sound system. My PS3 is currently only connected to TV via HDMI cable

The PS3 can do settings automatically in the sound or audio sections. Easiest connections would be HDMI between your A/V receiver and PS3 and between A/V receiver and TV

You could also use an optical cable directly from your PS3 if I remember correctly.

I'm only getting a PS3 in two weeks.

What receiver do you have?

If your receiver supports HDMI repeating, then it would be PS3 → HDMI → Receiver → HDMI → TV.

If your receiver doesn't support it, then you would leave it as is, but connect an optical/coax cable from the PS3 to the receiver.

At the moment I don't have a 5.1 Surround System yet wanted make sure before I go buy the wrong thing..

Rather go Optical to receiver. and HDMI straight to TV. Some receivers mess-up the HDMI tv signal in passthrough. Just my opinion.

Optical.

For some reason, sound doesnt go over my HDMI cable, that or the receiver doesn't play it back (its a good receiver too).

And if you have more than 2 devices? There is usually only one optical and one coax port.

Optical is not the way to go. Invest upfront in a decent AV receiver that does HDMI repeating (or audio return), even if it means that you can only afford the start with a set of stereo floor standing speakers. Then save up for the surround speakers and sub. Don't go and make the mistake of buying a cheap receiver just because it'll support your current requirement, think about the future.

If your budget is around R10k, then you can even get everything in one go.

Indeed, but with the PS3 he's got a BluRay + multimedia player in one device. Not much use for another optical input

I have a pre HDMI receiver that has three optical ports and a coaxial so that pretty much covers four devices.

I have a Pioneer VSX 1017AV-S - no audio via HDMI

I had to go optical. For some reason that I have never been able to understand I could not get surround sound going PS3 --> HDMI --> TV --> Optical --> Receiver. If I did it this way, no matter what I tried surround sound simply did not work.

Going optical from PS3 --> Receiver works though.

/shrug

Anybody got PS3 HD Video and Digital Audio to play out the receiver all from the HDMI cable?

Now that you mention it I also use a Media Player for BluRay mkv's.....

I have HDMI from PS3 to AVR and then HDMI to TV with digital sound and HD. Twas the easiest way for me
