hi there, how do i know if a PS3 is backward compatible before i buy one. If i do load thenew software which enables me to play PS2 games, does it play in the same quality as if im playing it on the PS2 or will the PS3 "upscale" the graphics?

IIRC only the 60gig version in SA is backward compatible. they stopped making those a while back so you would only be able to get a 2nd hand one with no gaurantee etc ...

there is a chip in the making but who knows how long that would take.

You're about 2.5 years too late for backwards compatibility. As mention by Ryu, only the original 60GB versions were/are PS2 compatible.

The first 80GB (never available locally) was also backwards compatible.

PSN will be releasing old PS2 titles for download in the coming months for some nostalgic times.

I have a 60GB PS3 and I'm not selling :D

Me too! Maybe when E-bay tops R10k for them.

The new slim PS3s may be backward compatible via a software upgrade. I'm sure this will be on the cards by the end of this year, or to push / boost sales again.

I heard that the PS3 will never be backwards compatible besides the 60GB, because of the Emotion chip needed.

With talks from a Sony head about PS2 games on the PSN store, I'm sure emulation will happen sooner or later.

Yeah, knowing $ony that what the patent is all about....and not actually functionality for the actual console...:(
